As of October 2022, Proton has sold more than 115,366 units, surpasses record made in 2021

National car maker Proton has kicked off the final quarter of 2022 by setting another milestone in a year filled with noteworthy achievements.

With 13,013 units (domestic + export) sold in October, this pushed sales to 115,366 for 2022, surpassing the 114,708 units achieved for the whole of 2021 and is the company’s best sales result since 2014.

The achievement means YTD sales have increased by 33.6 percent for the first 10 months of the year, so the figure is expected to grow with two months remaining in 2022.

Compared to the rest of the market, Proton finished October second in the sales table with an estimated market share of 21.1 percent while the YTD market share figure has retreated slightly to 19.9 percent.

Overall Total Industry Volume (TIV) for October is estimated to have exceeded 60,000 units for a third consecutive month as the Malaysian automotive market remains on target to break the record for total sales.

SUV sales volume approaches 50,000 units as export sales hit a nine-year high

Less than four years after launching its first SUV on 12 December 2018, Proton has taken a stranglehold on the segment to become Malaysia’s most popular SUV brand.

Led by the Proton X50, the national sales leader for the segment, which had 3,602 units delivered in October and now has total sales for the year of 33,193 units.

The Proton X70 achieved 1,391 units last month and its total volume now stands at 15,536 units. Therefore, 48,729 units of Proton SUVs have been delivered thus far in 2022.

“Proton’s fourth consecutive year of volume growth coincides with the brand’s entry into the SUV market with the Proton X70,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Proton.

“It’s an achievement the company is proud of and despite the launch of newer rivals, it remains a class leader and was even named Best Large SUV at the 2022 Carsifu Editors’ Choice Awards.

“Therefore, to celebrate its upcoming fourth birthday, we are offering customers gifts comprising accessories worth RM 1,499, interest rates as low as 2.52 percent and many other surprises from our dealerships if they purchase a Proton X70 in November.”

The best-selling Proton model however continues to be the Proton Saga. Another 5,262 units were delivered in October, pushing its YTD total sales to 45,965 units.

This marks a 42 percent increase over the previous year and proves the updated model launched on 12 May is even more popular with customers compared to its predecessor.

The Proton Persona and Proton Iriz meanwhile continue to mount a comeback. With 1,697 units delivered in October, the former is now 0.4 percent ahead of its total volume from the previous year while the latter is close to doing the same after reaching 661 units last month.

Finally, the Proton Exora continues to lead the C-segment MPV class and with 400 units delivered, it’s total volume for 2022 currently sits at 3,508 units.

Aside from local market success, Proton’s total volume growth for 2022 has also been boosted by the performance of its export division. Another 416 units were exported in October bringing total export volume to 4,741 units, its best performance since 2013.

As with domestic sales, the Proton Saga is the company’s best seller with 2,106 units followed by the Proton X70 with 1,608 units so far this year.

“The growth in Proton’s export division in 2022 is in line with our intention to penetrate more overseas markets. While Malaysia will be the company’s main market for some time to come, export sales has more untapped growth potential that fits in with our long-term growth targets to be a major regional automotive brand,” added Roslan Abdullah.
