Basic information of my car

BMW 320d Sport Line

Reasons why I bought this car

Since young, I always had a fascination towards BMW cars simply because of their looks and driving performance. Apart from the aggressive looks, the unique halo headlamps (also known as angel eyes DRL) distinguish them among other cars on the road.

The inspiring taglines of BMW, such as ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’ and ‘Sheer Driving Pleasure’ makes them appealing as they tend to focus on the pleasure and thrill of driving. On the other hand, local netizens have abbreviated BMW with various wordings, some of them are ‘Banyak Makan Wang’, ‘Brings Me Women’, ‘Banyak Masuk Workshop’, and etc. No matter what infamous abbreviations were named, every vehicle on the road are not perfect, each of them have their pros and cons respectively.

Car Selection Process

My previous car was a Volkswagen Golf GTI (MK5), and at the time I decided for a change of ride, I chose to make my dream come true to finally own my first BMW, specifically F30 because I find the looks of it is the best looking 3 series ever made to date. I shortlisted my search to the F30 328i and 320d. An unpopular opinion of mine is the idling and rev sound of diesel engines are like music to my ears, I just like the roaring sound it makes. After doing my observation and research, also from the influence of my fellow friends, I ended up going for the 320d Sport Line.

User experience

I decided to go for the blackout theme on my 320d, therefore I selected piano black paint, black rims and tint. The car is powered by a N47D20C turbo diesel engine which outputs 180hp and 380nM torque @ 1750-2750 rpm (on paper). This rear wheel drive car is paired with an automatic 8-speed ZF gearbox that delivers a pretty smooth shifting with closer ratios. The 320d does 0-100km/h in approximately 7.5 seconds. The top speed is limited to 230km/h (factory tuned cut-off).

Diesel engines are generally said to be robust and have a good amount of torque. And to talk about range, the fuel economy of this car is impressive. A full tank of Euro 5 diesel can do up to 900-1000km/h depending on one’s driving behavior. About the cabin, the cockpit looks pretty simple compared to the interior of its competitors in its class. However, it does provide a decent level of comfort to the passengers.

Pros of my car

The car is equipped with paddle shifter, and can also be shifted using the steptronic gear knob. There are 4 driving modes available, which consist of: ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+. The audio system OS, known as the iDrive provides various multimedia, handbook, vehicle information, communication (telephone), maintenance information and reminder alerts.

Cons of my car

There are some of common problems faced by this model, as far as I know and experienced some. One of the common issue is the wheel speed sensor tends to get faulty sometimes, which was a minor fix in my experience. This engine is also infamous for the timing chain issue, which is typically replaced when the car has done a mileage of approximately 100 to 150 clicks. For this scenario, it is true that a stitch in time saves nine. Once the signs arises, don’t wait further and do take immediate action, the mechanic adviced.

Summary

To sum it all, this is indeed a car that have a modern look, with decent power and fuel economy, which is comfortable to be taken on long distance road trips. Till today, I have no regrets for selecting this particular ride.
