Tesla replaces Model Y SR RWD with LR RWD in the US, 100 km more range for USD 2k more

Tesla has unveiled a new variant of the Model Y in the US: the Long Range (LR) Rear-wheel drive (RWD). However, the company has discontinued the Standard Range (SR) RWD Model Y, substituting it with the Long Range version at a USD 2,000 increase in price.

The brand updated its website to introduce the new Long Range RWD Model Y, starting at USD 44,990, featuring a larger battery. In contrast to the 260-mile (418 km) range of the SR RWD, the LR RWD has an extended range of 320 miles (515 km).

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, revealed on X that owners of the 260-mile battery built in the past several months received a vehicle with additional concealed battery capacity that could be “unlocked” for an extra cost ranging from USD 1,500 to USD 2,000.

This strategy aims to streamline manufacturing processes by utilising a single battery pack while restricting certain units to lower range levels via software.

Tesla plans to offer software enhancements allowing owners of the 260-mile SR RWD to unlock an additional 40-60 miles of range, depending on their battery cells. However, Musk noted that regulatory approval is pending to implement this extended range.

Regarding Malaysia, it remains uncertain whether we will emulate the US in replacing the SR RWD with the LR RWD model. Stay tuned to WapCar.my for further updates on this matter.

It appears that even market leader BYD is not immune to the slowdown in battery EVs (BEVs), with April 2024’s global sales of BYD’s BEV models reversing 3.9%, to 134,465 units. It’s BYD’s first month of decline for BEV models in a very long time. Note that this is a wholesales figure (vehicle is transferred to dealer), not actual vehicle registration by customers. Still, the slowdown in BEV demand is not a big problem for BYD. Unlike Tesla, BYD doesn’t believe in a BEV-only product line-up, prec

Following WTC Automotif (M) Sdn. Bhd.'s (WTCA) announcement in April that it has started production of the GAC GS3 Emzoom at its wholly owned Segambut plant, a separate announcement by GAC said the company has set a modest sales target of 2,000 units for 2024. The Segambut plant is the first to produce GAC models outside of China. Since the RM 60 million plant is 100 percent owned by WTCA, it’s technically a contract manufacturer for GAC. GAC says the plant has an annual capacity of 34,400 units
