Overview

Bentley Mulsanne – Overview

The Bentley Mulsanne was built as a Bentley that represents the pinnacle of British luxury motoring. The return of the Mulsanne name underlines Bentley’s sporting heritage and passion for power and speed which also celebrates the company’s success at the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race.

The flagship Bentley Mulsanne thus fuses solidity, coach-built elegance and sportiness in a super luxury limousine. For those who require even more relaxation features in the back seat, there is the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase.
The Bentley Mulsanne Speed meanwhile focuses on dynamic performance, targeting a more engaging drive to the keen driver.

Priced from RM3 million with duties included, the Bentley isn’t the sole super luxury limousine in this segment, as its perennial rival Rolls-Royce Phantom is now joined by the revitalized Mercedes-Maybach S650 limousine.

Exterior

Bentley Mulsanne – Exterior

The Bentley Mulsanne has a bold frontal design dominated by the traditional matrix grille and classic large round headlamps flanked by two smaller round lamps. All lights feature LED lighting technology.

It takes craftsmen nine weeks just to build the body of the Bentley Mulsanne. Plenty of stainless steel of the highest quality, hand-polished to shine the brightest are used on the matrix grille, fender vent, door handles as well as window surround.

The Bentley Mulsanne Extended wheelbase sees an additional 9.8 inches (250 mm) added to the wheelbase.
Bentley Motors has simplified upgrade options, with the Premier specifications package adding bright stainless door pillar finishers, flying ‘B’ radiator mascot and Jewel fuel filter cap.

The Speed gets distinguished via unique 21-inch wheels, rifled exhaust tailpipes, Speed badges on the lower fender B-wing vent and dark tinting on all exterior lamps and matrix radiator grille.

Interior

Bentley Mulsanne – Interior

Simple, easy to read meters are found in this super luxury limousine. A quirk that throwbacks to early Bentley days are the inverted dial needles, where the zero/rest starts from 1 o’clock position sweeping downwards as opposed to the regular 7 o’clock position (sweeping upwards). Under the infotainment display is a three-gauge pod surrounded with rich veneer displaying the fuel level, coolant temperature gauge and an elegant analogue clock.

Being fully customisable, owners can find a preferred wood veneer trim to match the colour of the soft leather, which itself has a few options of stitching patterns. Other options include umbrella holders, window curtains and rear headrest with adjustable wings. One can even find the option for another 19 different colours for the seatbelts, apart from black, white and beige colours.

Being a super luxury limousine, everything in the cabin is lined with hand-selected cowhide. Metalic fixtures are stainless steel and some switches are even fitted with glass.
Even the floor carpets in a super luxury limousine are exquisite- the Bentley Mulsanne includes specially developed deep-pile carpets.

Features

Bentley Mulsanne – Features

Standard features in the Bentley Mulsanne included a four-zone air conditioning system, eight-way adjustable rear seats with massage, ventilation and memory function plus electrically-operated privacy sunshades.

The Bentley Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase gets a very comfortable private-jet style reclining seats with footrest, super-soft Alcantara headrest, hand-veneered door panels and a long console with picnic tables, bottle cooler, USB charging ports and stowage. Due to its stretched roof installation, curtain airbags have been replaced by side seat-fitted airbags.

In the Bentley Mulsanne Speed, changes that are subtle as well as evident have been made, such as diamond-quilted hide seats and door panels, indented hide headlining, sports foot pedals, coined finish door handles and knurled finish on the shift lever and Bentley’s unique “organ stop” controller for the air-conditioning vents.

Safety

Standard safety features in the Bentley Mulsanne are rather limited, with just six airbags, adaptive headlamps, tyre pressure monitoring system, blind-spot monitoring and a rear-view camera.
Additional cost options are just the adaptive cruise control and bird’s eye view parking camera system.

Infotainment

Standard fitted infotainment system consists of an 8-inch colour touchscreen display with Apple Carplay support. Audio is channelled through 14 speakers including two subwoofers. However, nothing is exposed in the open in the Bentley Mulsanne. All connections are hidden in the clever media drawer, located just under the three-meter gauge pod.

However, Bentley recommends the Naim for Bentley premium audio system with 20 speakers, 2,200 Watts output and eight dedicated DSP modes. This is further paired with the Bentley Theatre rear-seat entertainment system with twin 10.4-inch electrically-deployed tablets, giving occupants only the best entertainment experience in the Bentley Mulsanne.
There is also an integrated iPad charger and space for a wireless keyboard in the long centre console.

Powertrain

Bentley Mulsanne – Powertrain

Engine

Powering the 2020 Bentley Mulsanne limousine is the legendary V8 engine displacing 6.75 litres (pronounced six and three quarter). Modern technologies built into the engine that had its design laid out in the 50s now sees power outputs of 512 PS at 4,000 rpm and 1,020 Nm at 1,750 rpm. Redline is diesel-like at just 4,500 rpm, as the valvetrain is still on the pushrod actuation, with the camshaft now having variable phasing.
Bentley also introduced a more powerful tune for the Mulsanne Speed model. The ‘six and three quarter’ V8 engine pushes out an additional 25 PS and 80 Nm to peak 537 PS and 1,100 Nm respectively.

Transmission

The Bentley Mulsanne has an eight-speed automatic transmission with shift paddles, an electronic shift interface and sport mode. The Bentley Mulsanne Speed gets faster programming which not only shifts faster but holds the engine rpm higher and longer. This ensures the two turbochargers are spooling at the maximum rate and deliver even more responsive thrust.

Chassis

Suspending a 2.7 ton super luxury limousine is no simple task. Continuous Damping Control (CDC) electronically controlled air springs monitor and adjust the vehicles damping plus automatic ride height. Large brake disc measuring 400 mm in diameter front and 370 mm at the rear ensures confident and fade-free stopping power.

Standard wheel size is 20 inches, increasing to 21 inches for the Mulsanne Speed.

Drivetrain

The 2020 Bentley Mulsanne is a rear-wheel drive super luxury limousine. There is no option for an all-wheel drive model.

Driving Performance

Bentley Mulsanne – Driving Performance

The Bentley Mulsanne with 512 PS and 1,020 Nm completes the century dash in 5.3 seconds, while the longer extended wheelbase takes 5.5 seconds. The top speed for both models is 296 km/h.
Meanwhile, the Mulsanne Speed with 537 PS and 1,100 Nm plus a faster shift programme in the transmission does 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The additional power sends the Mulsanne Speed to reach over three hundred clicks with a top speed of 305 km/h.

The “Bentley” driving mode stiffens the air suspension, alters the steering response and powertrain setting to provide a sporty driving experience that actually makes driving the Bentley Mulsanne feel smaller than its physical size. Bodyroll is surprisingly little, with the chassis full of poise as one traverse winding mountainous pass with confidence.

Ride Comfort

Bentley Mulsanne – Ride Comfort

Bentley employs active engine mounts just to further isolate vibrations from the cabin. Dunlop meanwhile provide specially made tyres that emit less noise. The ride comfort is smooth, absorbing almost all imperfection except for the sharper ones.
Compared to its peers- Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Maybach which have calibrated their air suspension with a better spectrum, tiny imperfections can be felt in the Bentley Mulsanne.

The cabin is very well isolated nonetheless, where it’s found to be quieter than the competition. All glass panels apart from the windshield have enhanced acoustic and infrared-reflective interlayer to cut noise and heat penetration.

Fuel Consumption

Bentley Mulsanne – Fuel Economy

The fuel consumption of the Bentley Mulsanne is rated at 15 litres per 100 km (6.7 km/L). One of the measures used to reduce fuel consumption is cylinder deactivation, with combustion happening on just four cylinders during cruising. A 96-litre fuel tank ensures practical range given the Bentley Mulsanne’s huge hunger for fuel.

Conclusion

Bentley Mulsanne – Conclusion

The Bentley Mulsanne offers a better dynamism than its peers, appealing to the driver than being at the back seat. There is plenty of shove from idle coming from the legendary six and three-quarter engine up front.

The chassis tuning by the team at Crewe will surely impress drivers who feel more confidence and feedback behind the wheel of the Bentley Mulsanne.

The cabin is very isolated too, and the roughest roads transmit marginally more shocks relative to its competitors. There are just so many personalization options for the super luxury limousine, making the Bentley Mulsanne incredibly rare and bespoke.

The fuel consumption of new 2024 Bentley Mulsanne in Malaysia is ranged from 15.0 litres per 100 km to 15.9 litres per 100 km,andthe manufacturers claimed fuel consumption of 2017 Bentley Mulsanne Mulsanne is 15.0 litres per 100 km, the manufacturers claimed fuel consumption of 2017 Bentley Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase is 15.0 litres per 100 km, andthe manufacturers claimed fuel consumption of 2018 Bentley Mulsanne Speed is 15.9 litres per 100 km.
