Why we think Malaysians won't get the Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 or CLA 250

Revealed early last year, the second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA (C118) carries on the recipe that made its predecessor a success – sleek design, compact dimensions, and naturally, the badge. However, we think lower rung variants like Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 and CLA 250 won't make it here in Malaysia.

Since the first generation CLA, younger demographics began to be associated with the brand, which marked the start of the change in brand image. These days, you’re more likely to find Mercedes-Benzes parked around popular hangout areas in KL than a Honda Civic Type R (FK8), for example.

If it’s so successful, why isn’t the new one coming here?

Well, with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class around, particularly the A-Class sedan, there isn’t much of a differentiation between the A-Class sedan and the CLA.

CLA (left) and A-Class (right)

Both are underpinned by the same platform, features the same interior and powered by the same engines. To put it bluntly, they are just wearing different sets of outfits.

Roll in the AMG

However, that’s not to say we won’t get the red-hot Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 because the A45 is only available as a hatchback.

It’s only a matter of time before the Mercedes-AMG A45 arrives, and we would hazard a guess to say that the CLA 45 will probably be alongside it. Both likely in their most powerful S variant.

Just a quick run through of the CLA 45 S

  • 421 PS at 6,750 rpm
  • 500 Nm at 5,000-5,250 rpm
  • 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT)
  • 4Matic+ all-wheel drive with Drift mode
  • 0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds
  • Top speed limited to 270 km/h

Currently, the CLA 45 has the market all to its own. BMW has the M235i Gran Coupe but that's closer to the CLA 35, and the Audi RS3 exists as a traditional sedan/hatch body type.

Perhaps there'll be a M2 Gran Coupe in the future, but for now the CLA 45 has no direct rivals.

Toyota's Kinto is getting bored, finds a way to make the AH30 Alphard and Vellfire sliding doors close faster

You know how some cars can be truly fantastic except for one minor detail that you just can’t overlook and it ends up ruining the entire driving experience. It could be a terrible head unit or a bad seating position. Well, some of the engineers at Toyota’s Kinto subscription service thought that could be the abysmally slow speed of the sliding doors on the previous AH30 generation of the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Either that or they must be getting really bored over there. Or someone has secr

Review: BYD Dolphin in Malaysia - A solid choice for EV beginners, except for one thing

You might be aware that Malaysia prohibits the import of electric vehicles (EVs) priced below RM 100,000, and this is indeed accurate. The rationale behind this policy, driven by the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), is actually sound when you consider their goal of attracting investments in the EV sector. In the world of technology, most of the valuable stuff is in the higher-end product range. Cheaper electric cars have minimal technological sophistication; they're kind of li
