Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 4Matic+ – Overview

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 was introduced together with the sedan version. The model is part of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s Dream Cars collection, a series of emotionally-desirable models such as coupes, sports cars and convertibles.

Fully imported from Germany, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 4Matic+ was priced at RM764,888 with sales tax. This facelift model also replaced the older E43 model that was fitted with the V6 engine and lower power outputs.

This price range puts it in direct competition with very few models, such as the BMW 840i, Audi S7 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz’s own stylish four-door coupe, the CLS-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 gets the range-topping Multibeam LED headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus next to double-bar grille, similar to the ones on the larger V8 models. The rear meanwhile features a new lower diffuser design with new integrated circular quad exhaust tips. They might look hollow, but the sound from the AMG Sports Exhaust provides a subdued six-cylinder soundtrack that has a mature note to it.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 for Malaysia also comes with the Night Package that has the front and rear bumper inserts, window surrounds and side mirror covers in high gloss black. A subtle spoiler on the trunk lid completes the AMG styling package.

A massive panoramic moonroof is also fitted as standard on the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53. As for tyre sizes, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe E53 comes in a staggered wheel arrangement, with the tyre sizes being 245/35R20 at the front and 275/30R20 at the rear. The aerodynamics-optimised five twin-spoke rim design also looks great on the coupe, finished in mysterious tantalite grey paintwork.

Dashboard

The dashboard of the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 is shared with the sedan, but furnished with the gorgeous turbine air vents in chrome. They also illuminate together with the ambient lighting! The dashboard and upper sections of the door panels are lined with Artico material (simulated leather) and red double stitching paired with gloss black and aluminium central trim finishers.

Another showpiece in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 is the specially-made analogue clock. It is nice to see a mechanical device in such a high-tech coupe with 510 horsepower. The steering wheel meanwhile is the AMG Performance steering wheel with flat-bottom design and wrapped with Nappa leather and Dinamica microfibre. A red centre-marking on the steering wheel paired with the red seat belts further brings the AMG sporting character into the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 cabin.

Instrument cluster

The driver’s instrument cluster in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 is the fully digital display measuring 12.3 inches. The instrument display is highly customizable, with three different themes, various driving information and other content. There is also an AMG specific theme and content such as performance AMG Track Pace data logging and engine parameters.

Changing and scrolling through the myriad of information is done via the capacitive touch-sensitive controllers on the nice-to-hold AMG Performance steering wheel. It is very intuitive after a few minutes behind the wheel. A head-up display with specific AMG content is also included in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53.

Space and practicality

The Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 offers lots of headroom and legroom for the front occupant thanks to its high roofline. The rear meanwhile seats two and also have respectable space and properly sized seats. Similar to many Mercedes-Benz models, the front armrest opens with a centrally split lid, allowing ease of use by both occupants.

The large storage space with two cupholders and room for smartphones see a wireless smartphone charger placed in there. The rear seat, for two, doesn’t have an armrest but there is a shallow storage compartment with two cupholders. As such, squeezing a third person in the centre is not possible. Added practicality in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 is the 40-20-20 split-folding rear seats. Boot space is rated at 425 litres.

Comfort features

The sports seats feature more pronounced contouring and lateral support with an AMG marking on the seatback. Nappa leather in red and black upholster the sports seats of the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53. A nice feature of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is the automatic seat-belt presenter for driver and front passenger.

This mechanism reduces the strain from turning your back or overstretching your arms to reach for the seatbelts which are placed further away in a coupe. Two USB charging ports (Type C) are located inside the centre armrest for the front occupants.

Infotainment

Smartphone connectivity is also available to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as a wireless charger. The audio system in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 gets the Burmester 13-speaker, nine-channel DSP 590-Watt amplifier with surround sound system presented in the intricately designed metallic speaker grilles. Engine noises are also pleasantly amplified with the surround sound system.

Engine

The new engine is stuffed with many advanced technologies, such as an electric-driven supercharger, an exhaust turbocharger, followed by a 22 PS / 250 Nm integrated starter motor and 48-volt electrical architecture.

Sound is of importance to Mercedes-Benz AMG, where it is one of the top reasons customers choose this brand. As such, the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 comes standard with an AMG exhaust system with a variable flap.

Transmission

In Sport+ mode, the transmission shifts incredibly fast through the shift paddles and even does rev-matching in downshifting plus motorsport-styled pops and burbles from the exhaust.

Chassis

Fully adaptive multi-air chamber shock absorbers called AMG Ride Control+ ensures great body control while driven enthusiastically, as well as best comfort while touring across interstates. Stopping power in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 is meanwhile provided by 370 mm brake discs grabbed 4-piston calipers in front finished in subtle dark silver while the rear has 360 mm brake disc and single-piston calipers.

Engine performance

On the move, the silky-smooth in-line six-cylinder engine demonstrates a level of refinement only such an arrangement can offer. Power delivery is so effortless even by the standards of a turbocharged Mercedes-Benz. It is a common set-up to map out the power curve of a turbocharged engine to build up tonnes of torque at the lower engine speeds and then tapering off dramatically after 5,500 rpm, as it reaches its rev limiter. 

With this complex hybrid set up, the powerful motor, up to 22 PS and 250 Nm of torque is used to fill the torque dips throughout the engine rpm range, thus greatly expanding the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53’s drivability. High torque without turbo lag. Compared to the BMW B58 engines, this new unit from Mercedes-Benz AMG is quite a jewel.

Transmission performance

In slow-moving traffic congestion, the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 behaves like a proper luxury coupe- smooth and refined. Once on the open road, manual shifting is done rapidly and downshifting even comes with promising exhaust burbles and pops.

Steering and handling

Agility has gone up a few notches in the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53, with the steering accuracy close to a BMW M5, and the chassis and electronic controls are so well calibrated that they deliver power very effectively and progressively. The in-line six-cylinder engine is well suited to the overall driving sensation of not being too eager nor too harsh unlike the large V8 engine E 63 S model.

Straight-line performance is also better than expected, with plenty of grunt from the new in-line six-cylinder engine. The powertrain moves the Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 with grace and maturity, gathering pace in a manner that feels more sophisticated unlike the urgency in the V8. 

The Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class Coupe E53 is not something you would bring to the track as the suspension is not tuned for outright agility. Nonetheless, the air suspension does a good job of keeping the body roll minimal.
