  • Luxury and Refinement- Key touchpoints in the cabin are finished in high quality leather and feels expensive to the touch.

  • Features- Comprehensive standard driver safety and assistance system, on top of a generous standard equipment list which include Mercedes’ new MBUX infotainment system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto among others.

Cons

  • Ride and Handling- The standard fit stiffer sports suspension is too firm for everyday use and noticeably less comfortable compared to the standard SUV model.

  • Interior Design- Based on Mercedes-Benz’s last generation’s interior design format, the cabin layout is starting to show its age especially compared to the more updated interior cabin like the ones in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Overview

Few other creations in the motoring world divides opinion more than the inception of the Coupé SUV. Pioneered by the BMW X6, the idea of trimming off the roof from a practical SUV for a more desirable coupé-like silhouette is nothing short of an abomination to some, but well received by many others. Automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, soon jumps onto the band wagon of the niche Coupé SUV segment, first with the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé, which made its appearance in the Jurassic World movie, and soon with the smaller Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé.

In 2019, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia introduced the facelifted C253 GLC Coupé in the sole GLC 300 Coupé AMG Line trim. Based on the same platform that underpins the Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé is essentially the SUV equivalent to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé, with two extra rear doors. Locally assembled in Malaysia, the facelifted model features revised exterior and updated interior equipment. Prices starts from RM 403,536 (OTR without insurance and 0 % sales tax) and rivals the likes of BMW X4, Audi Q5 Sportback and the Range Rover Evoque.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Design

The facelifted model brings along a revised front fascia, now sporting a more angular trapezoidal headlamps design and a more upright, single-louvred Mercedes-Benz’s diamond grille. AMG Line exterior package also brings along a wing-shaped front bumper with larger faux air intakes, aggressively styled front apron, and a diffuser-like element at the rear, flanked by a pair of chrome plated exhaust exits.

The standard Night Package introduces high-gloss black finishes on various external elements including the side mirrors housing, AMG side sills panel, beltline trim strip and window weather strip, front and rear apron, and the front radiator grille. Also standard on the AMG Line are the 20-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels and the aluminium-look running boards with rubber studs.

The dramatically slopping roofline with fastback profile accentuates its sleek coupé-like silhouette, tastefully executed with subtle curved and smooth body lines next to the more ostentatious BMW X4. Pronounced shoulder haunches further exemplifies its athletic stance. At the rear, the broad two-piece LED lamps features Mercedes-Benz GLE-inspired three-dimensional polygonal signatures.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Dimension

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé is positioned between the larger Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé and the smaller Mercedes-Benz GLA. Based on the Mercedes-Benz MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform that also underpins the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the standard Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Coupé variant shares an identical wheelbase and width with its non-identical SUV twin but measures 76 mm longer and 37 mm lower. Tipping the scale at 1,785 kg, it is also 50 kg heavier than the standard model.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Interior

Stepping inside, you get the AMG Line interior, featuring Nappa leather AMG steering wheel with galvanised paddle shifters, leather upholstery, light longitudinal-grain aluminium trim, illuminated door sills with ‘Mercedes-Benz’ leterring, AMG floor mats, rear door roller sunblinds and an updated 10.25-inch touchscreen display with Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system.

Like the standard Mercedes-Benz GLC, the coupé variant makes do with a separate 12.3-inch digital drivers display as opposed to the new-generation free standing dual widescreen display seen on more updated models like the Mercedes-Benz GLE.

Despite the slopping roofline, interior occupant space especially at the rear is not as cramped as one might expect. But the narrow window opening and the shallow rear windscreen limits natural lighting into the cabin, which can feel a tad dark and claustrophobic. With the rear seats in place, the 500-litre boot space is only 50 litres shy of the space in the standard SUV thanks to the longer body.

  • Features

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Features

As standard, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé comes equipped with Thermotronic tri-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, sliding sunroof, 12.3-inch digital drivers display, Keyless-Go, and Hands-Free Access.

The new Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system can be accessed via the 10.25-inch touchscreen display or the touchpad on the centre console. Also available are Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Mercedes Me connected services, which is accessible via the onboard LTE communications module, and a premium Burmester surround sound system.

Standard Safety and Assistance Package brings along 360 degrees camera, Blind Spot Assist, Parktronic Parking Assist, Active Lane Keep Assist, Active Brake Assist, Cruise Control, Pre-Safe System, Adaptive Brake Light, knee bag, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

  • Driving Performance

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Driving Performance

    Engine

Power comes courtesy of the M264 2.0 litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine from the standard GLC 300 AMG Line SUV. It produces 258 PS at 5,700 RPM and 370 NM from 1,800 RPM. 0-100 km/h is achieved in 6.3 seconds, onwards to a top speed here of 240 km/h.

    Transmission

Drive is sent to all four wheels via a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission through Mercedes-Benz’ proprietary 4Matic all-wheel drive system, which can send up to 100% of torque to each axle, maximizing traction for improved safety and agility.

  • Ride Comfort

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Ride Comfort

To set itself apart from the regular Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV as the sportier alternative, the coupé variant is fitted with a stiffer sports suspension as standard. As a result, the ride is unnecessarily firm and noticeably less comfortable than the standard GLC with little benefit to the handling. The standard fit 20-inch wheels does not help either.

  • Fuel Comusmption

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Fuel Consumption

Fuel economy is rated at 7.1L/100 Km.

  • Conclusion

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé Conclusion

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé is a car for those who wish to stand out in the crowd but still wish to enjoy the benefit of a practical high riding SUV. With no less practicality compared to the standard SUV, the coupé offers both form and function, albeit with a less than satisfactory ride comfort. Whether it’s worth almost RM 65,000 over the fundamentally identical standard model, is still certainly up for debate.
