Proton Iriz RX Supercar with 600 PS takes on World Rallycross Championship in 2021

A team based in the UK is planning to compete in some world-renowned rallycross tournaments in 2021 including the World Rallycross Championship in a specially modified Proton Iriz RX Supercar.

Team RX Racing will helm the Iriz RX Supercar. Besides the World Rallycross Championship, the team also plans to compete the Iriz in the British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy and the European Rallycross Championship.

The fantastically-named rallycross Iriz is based on the Iriz R5 that was developed by Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM). Piloting the Iriz RX Supercar will be Irishman Ollie O’Donovan who was a RallyCross British champion in 2007.

Why did the team select the Iriz? According to the chief engineer of Team RX Racing, Tony Bardy, after 15 years of competing in rallycross tournaments with Ford Fiestas and Focuses, the team wanted a change of pace.

O’Donovan wanted something different that stands out from the crowd, and to him and the team, the Iriz fits that bill.

According to the principal of MEM, Chris Mellors, transforming the Iriz R5 rally car into the Iriz RX Supercar isn’t a huge issue as the team did envision putting the Iriz in rallycross tournaments.

There have been no details on the performance powertrains of the Iriz RX Supercar for now. Based on FIA World Rallycross Championship rules, it should be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 600 PS mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox that powers all 4 wheels.
