It would seem that the all-new, 2022 Honda Civic Type R will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid powertrain. The successor to Honda's segment-defining hot-hatch is slated to make its debut in the first half of 2022.
According to this Japanese publication, the most likely powertrain of choice will be an improved version of the existing K20C engine in the current FK8 Type R, powering the front wheels. Additionally, there will be an individual electric motor propelling each rear wheel.
A person close to the Type R project, who has since left the company has shared that, "It is possible to achieve Type R performance with a pure EV for future carbon neutrality, but what is required of Type R is not just performance. Electrification is inevitable. It is necessary to strengthen the Type R by taking advantage of it."
This does make sense for the incoming Civic Type R, as Honda can draw expertise from its Formula One powertrain program (not for much longer, as they are exiting the sport in 2022). What we do hope to see retained is the best-in-class 6-speed manual transmission.
Currently, the FK8-generation Honda Civic Type R is powered by the aforementioned K20C 2.0-litre, turbocharged engine (310 PS, 400 Nm), paired to a 6-speed manual transmission.
