Slightly more than 10 years later, production of the famed Honda Civic Type R has returned to Japan.
The FD2-generation Civic Type R was the last generation model to be manufactured in Japan; the successor FK2 and FK8 Type R models were manufactured at Honda’s Swindon plant, but said plant has since shuttered.
Now, production of the new FL5 Civic Type has returned to Japan and Honda has released a new video showcasing the production of its new performance hatchback.
That said, Japan may not be the only plant producing the FL5 Type R, as recent developments have suggested that the model may be locally-assembled (CKD) in China by Dongfeng Honda.

As a brief recap, the FL5-generation Civic Type R continues to be motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, albeit fettled to output 330 PS and 420 Nm. Drive continues to be routed to the front wheels via a slick 6-speed manual transmission.
Closer to home, you may want to prepare you cheque for the imminent arrival of the FL5 Civic Type R in Malaysia, as there is a good chance of the model will be offered by Honda Malaysia.
Recall that the previous FK8-generation model was offered here a few years ago, priced at RM 330k.
In Japan, the new FL5 Civic Type R is 5 percent more expensive than the model it replaces. Assuming that the same 5 percent increase in Japanese prices applies here, we expect Honda Malaysia to launch the model here sometime in late 2023, priced at around RM 350k.
