An EV AMG is coming to Malaysia - Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 hinted

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia will be amping up its portfolio of fully electric EQ models next year with the first ever electric AMG. Presently, the company is already offering five EQ models in Malaysia โ€“ EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE, and EQS.

At the sidelines of the launch of the Mercedes-Benz EQE yesterday, we asked Michael Jopp, Vice President of Sales & Marketing on the prospects of an electric AMG model for Malaysia, Jopp said โ€œYes. Itโ€™s part of the exciting news for next year. We will come to that later.โ€

Jopp didnโ€™t say which model has been earmarked for Malaysia but globally, Mercedes-Benz offers two electric AMG models, available in three variants โ€“ EQE 43, EQE 53, and EQS 53, all in 4Matic+ guise.

Of the three, we think the flagship EQS 53 4Matic+ is the most likely model, as the flagship EQS was also the first EQ model to be launched here.

In Europe, the EQS 53 starts from 152,546 Euros, which is about 13 percent more expensive than the EQS 450+ (starting from 135,529 Euros).

The โ€˜regularโ€™ rear-wheel drive EQS 450+ makes 333 PS and 565 Nm (for Malaysia), with a 0-100 km/h century sprint in 6.2 seconds.

The all-wheel drive AMG EQS 53 bumps the figures up to 761 PS and 1,020 Nm, with a 0-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds when equipped with AMG Dynamic Plus Package (658 PS / 950 Nm, 3.8 seconds without).

Unique to the AMG model is the AMG Sound Experience synthesized sounds, well because thereโ€™s no more V8 under the bonnet of this EQS.

Charging capacity remains the same as the regular EQS โ€“ 11 kW AC (22 kW optional) and 200 kW DC. The battery capacity remains the same, at 107.8 kWh (usable capacity). Claimed driving range under the WLTP standard is between 529 km โ€“ 586 km, which a lot less than the EQS 450+โ€™s maximum range of 782 km.

8% service tax: Car maintenance cost likely to go up in 2024, continuity of free service packages in doubt

Yesterdayโ€™s tabling of Budget 2024 proposed for the current service tax rate of 6 percent to be increased to 8 percent. Details on effective implementation date, or guidelines for car workshops are still lacking so we will have to wait for a separate announcement from Customs. The use of the term service tax is also causing a
