BMW X1 M35i xDrive (U11) debuts - Most powerful X1 ever; 300 PS / 400Nm

BMW has pulled the covers off the most powerful internal combustion version of its X1 SUV ever, the (U11) BMW X1 M35i xDrive.

At the heart of the beast is the latest-generation 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque. A more powerful 317 PS version will be sold in the US market.

Though the engine is carried over from the previous generation, it runs a different 'Miller' combustion cycle now, which required beefier internals as well as redesigned intake ports, combustion chambers, camshaft timing, ignition system and exhaust gas routing.

The engine is mated to a 7-speed double-clutch transmission (DCT) which features an M Sport Boost function where powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest setting. The X1 M35i is claimed to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

Channelling power to the ground is the BMW xDrive AWD system which is fitted with a mechanical limited-slip differential built into the transmission. The xDrive system is able to transmit up to 26 percent of its power to the front wheels depending on traction requirements.

The X1 M35i is supplied with adaptive M suspension and sport steering as standard. Customers can also opt for M Compound brakes that provide enhanced braking performance and reduced weight.

The design of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive reflects its high-performance nature, featuring M-specific design cues such as the M kidney grille with vertical double bars, M exterior mirror caps, and four exhaust tailpipes.

Inside, the M-specific interior includes Alcantara-covered surfaces, Aluminium Hexacube Dark trim, and an M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles. Optional M Sport seats and a range of other customisation options are also available.

Along the flanks, the X1 M35i features 19-inch twin-spoke lightweight alloy wheels. Optional 20-inch M light-alloy wheels are also on offer.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive comes with a wide array of standard and optional equipment, including BMW Live Cockpit Plus, automatic climate control, and BMW Maps navigation system.

In terms of infotainment, the X1 M35i features the BMW Curved Display - consisting of the 10.25-inch information and 10.7-inch control display screens - with BMW iDrive QuickSelect and Operating System 9.
