All-new 2021 Hyundai Elantra previewed in Malaysia - full SmartSense ADAS, CBU Korea

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motor has just previewed the all-new, seventh-generation 2021 Hyundai Elantra in Malaysia. HSDM has yet to announce prices of the new model, only mentioning that it will be priced from RM 1xx,888.

Bookings are opened, and those interested can place a booking fee of RM 777 for one.

What do I need to know?

The Hyundai Elantra is a C-segment sedan that competes against the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla Altis, but being imported from Korea (Ulsan plant), it will inevitably be priced closer to the Japan-made Mazda 3. So don't expect it to be cheap.

Where will the all-new Hyundai Elantra come from?

The all-new model is imported (CBU) from Ulsan, Korea.

Does the Elantra get a new powertrain?

Codenamed CN7, the all-new Hyundai Elantra will be offered in one variant, powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre SmartStream petrol engine that does 123 PS and 154 Nm. Drive is sent to the front wheels via’s Hyundai’s new Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT; Hyundai's term for a CVT) with eight virtual ratios.

It also comes with selectable drive modes, which alters the steering, engine, and gearbox response. The full-digital meter cluster also responds to the various drive modes accordingly.

Standard equipment on the sole Elantra 1.6 variant include:

• LED tail lights
• 17-inch alloy wheels
• Black or Light Grey interior upholstery
• 8-way power-adjustable driver seat with 2-way lumbar support
• Automatic dual-zone air-conditioning
• Rear air-conditioning vents
• 8-inch infotainment display
• Android Auto, Apple CarPlay
• 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
• Qi wireless charger
• Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

What about safety equipment?

The all-new Elantra is HSDM’s second model to feature Hyundai’s SmartSense ADAS suite (the first is the Kona).

The SmartSense ADAS suite includes these features:

• Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
• Lane Following Assist (LFA)
• Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop and Go
• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – Vehicle, Pedestrian, Cyclist
• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist – Junction (FCA-JT)
• Blindspot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
• Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
• Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA)
• Safe Exit Warning (SEW)
• Rear Cross Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
• Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)

These are in addition to the regular safety equipment, including six airbags, stability control, traction control, and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.

It is quite a looker

In terms of design, this Korean sedan looks a lot more flamboyant than its Japanese rivals. It's well equipped too. Safety features is on par with a Honda Civic, while its interior looks as expensive as a Mazda 3, but cabin space is lot more spacious and is more practical than the Mazda 3.

Alright, does the all-new Hyundai Elantra get new colours?

Four body colours are available, namely Polar White, Electric Shadow, Amazon Grey, and Intense Blue.
