RWD 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe makes amends to enthusiasts for 2 Series GC

BMW has released its initial photos and details of the upcoming 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe (codenamed G42), which is now in the final phase of development process.

Unlike the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, the 2 Series Coupe rides on the CLAR platform with a longitudinally-positioned engine and rear-wheel drive layout. BMW says the 2 Series Coupe possesses an almost 50/50 front to rear weight distribution. Enthusiasts shall be aroused.

Yes, it drifts.

Until the full-fat M2 arrives, the range topper will be the M240i with the B58 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine, making 374 PS and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Drive is sent to all four wheels via the xDrive all-wheel drive system.

BMW says the system's rear-wheel oriented design ensures hallmark BMW driving pleasure in conjunction with a power distribution that adapts to adverse road and weather conditions. The xDrive system gets the M sports differential at the rear axle with an electronic variable locking effect.

Lower rung models such as the BMW 220i and 230i are exclusively rear-wheel driven, as reported by Autocar. The 230i will receive a 245 PS version of the B48 turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Prototype model believed to be the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe

More details of the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe will be revealed in the coming months, while sales in Europe are expected to begin in Q4 2021 and deliveries commencing in early 2022.
