All-new 2020 BMW X5 plug-in hybrid launched in Malaysia, priced from RM 440,745

BMW Malaysia has just launched the all-new 2020 BMW X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in Malaysia, priced from RM 440,745 (without SST, valid until 31st December 2020). With SST in place, the X5 PHEV costs RM 448,800. Both prices are on-the-road, without insurance.

What's under the bonnet?

First up, the mechanical bits.

The all-new BMW X5 xDrive45e gets a 3.0-litre B58 turbocharged straight-six petrol engine that does 286 PS from 5,000 rpm to 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm from 1,500 rpm to 3,500 rpm. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that also houses an electric motor that does 113 PS and 265 Nm, allowing for a combined system output of 394 PS and 600 Nm.

Compared to the F15-generation BMW X5 PHEV, the all-new G05 model does 81 PS and 150 Nm more.

Despite weighing more than the F15-generation X5 (2,975 kg vs 2,933 kg), the G05 X5 xDrive45e completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.6 seconds, quicker than the predecessor’s 6.8-second time.

The G05 X5 xDrive45e also consumes less fuel and emits less CO2 than its predecessor, as it sips 2.5-litre/100 km under the WLTP test cycle and emits 56 g/km. For comparison, the F15 X5 PHEV sips 3.3-litre/100 km under the same test cycle and emits 77 g/km.

Putting aside the mechanical bits, the G05 X5 xDrive45e gets the same M Sport treatment like the regular petrol variant.

As such, it gets large 20-inch M lightweight style 740M alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights with BMW Selective Beam, and blue brake calipers.

Interior is as upmarket as it gets

The similarities continue inside – the G05 X5 xDrive45e gets Vernasca leather upholstery, a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The new plug-in hybrid from BMW also includes a wireless charging pad and BMW Display Key. For the rear, the X5 xDrive45e is fitted with two 10.2-inch touchscreen displays.

In terms of safety, the G05 X5 xDrive45e includes Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, passive cruise control, Rear Collision Prevention, and Speed Limit Info. Like the G20 3 Series, this SUV also includes Reversing Assistant. It also gets a 360-degree view monitor.

Like other BMW models, the G05 X5 xDrive45e is backed by a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty. BMW is also offering free scheduled servicing for 5 years/100,000 km. For those worried about the hybrid battery, BMW Malaysia has extended the hybrid battery's warranty by another 2 years/60,000 km, bringing the hybrid battery warranty to 8 years/160,000 km.

Toyota's Kinto is getting bored, finds a way to make the AH30 Alphard and Vellfire sliding doors close faster

You know how some cars can be truly fantastic except for one minor detail that you just can’t overlook and it ends up ruining the entire driving experience. It could be a terrible head unit or a bad seating position. Well, some of the engineers at Toyota’s Kinto subscription service thought that could be the abysmally slow speed of the sliding doors on the previous AH30 generation of the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Either that or they must be getting really bored over there. Or someone has secr
