The world embraces Indonesian-made cars as exports go up 37.7% in the first 8 months of 2021

Despite not having its own (long-running) ‘national’ carmaker, Thailand and Indonesia are among the largest and most important players in the ASEAN region’s automotive industry. While the Kingdom has always been the largest in terms of production and exports, Indonesia is quickly playing catch-up.

According to data provided by Gaikindo (The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries), automotive manufacturers based in the archipelago had exported 185,012 units between January and August 2021.

Compared to the same period last year, the latest figures showed a 37.7% growth – 134,341 units were exported in the first 8 months of 2020.

Next, PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) exported 40,914 units in the first 8 months of the year. Some models that were exported included the Toyota Innova, Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Sienta, Toyota Vios, and Toyota Yaris.

Mitsubishi Motors and Suzuki are placed third and fourth respectively with 33,915 units and 26,899 units.

Honda comes in at fifth with 4,590 units of the Brio exported to the Philippines and Vietnam. By 2022, the all-new second-generation Honda BR-V will be added to this list with the Indonesian-made 7-seater crossover expected to be exported to other markets outside of Southeast Asia including the Latin American and African markets.
