2022 Perodua Myvi with Gear Up accessories looks like a permanently angry Pikachu

Just like all its siblings, the 2022 Perodua Myvi is also offered with Gear Up accessory upgrades, but surprisingly the accessory rollout didn’t come at the same time the car was launched. Perodua introduced the Gear Up accessories for the Myvi earlier this month to very little fanfare, about six months after the car’s official launch. 

You have to admit, Perodua’s Gear Up accessories aren’t always a hit. Not everybody can get behind the teeth-like appearance of the Perodua Ativa’s accessories. The same could be said about the pre-facelift Myvi’s accessories.

In fact, the Gear Up accessories on the pre-facelift are so obscure that you will have to be very savvy to be able to notice the extra bits and pieces installed on the car.

The most obvious piece of add-on on the pre-facelift was the thin chrome panel running across the tailgate connecting the taillights. I have to say that there wasn’t much reason to purchase the add-on for the pre-facelift.

On the facelift, however, Perodua has finally got the formula right. Other than the fact that it is much more obvious, the Gear Up accessories actually improve the look of the car.

If the Myvi without the accessories gives off the feel of a smiling Pikachu, then the Gear Up accessories make the car look like an angry Pikachu who is about to blast some electricity out of his body. 

Since Perodua has done away with the fog lamps, the sporty bumper design encompasses the new DRLs instead. Perodua has also changed the colour of the new housing so it is in contrast with the car’s body colour.

The front skirting is now sharper and also finished in a different colour from the car’s body colour to further accentuate the accessories. While the standard Myvi also comes with side dual-tone skirting, the Gear Up version has sharper edges to set it apart from the standard skirting.

Thankfully, Perodua decided to skip the chrome strip that previously ran across the tailgate. For the facelift, the only add-ons at the rear include an angular skirting and a sporty roof spoiler.

Note that our test unit does not have all the bits and bops that the Gear Up package has to offer. So, we’re missing the chrome garnish on the side mirrors and the window sill.

Most importantly, we’re missing the more stylish seat covers that would replace the garish red seats that come as standard for the range-topping Myvi Advanced variant.

These add-ons all come at a price, based on the kit available on our test kit: 

• Front and rear bumper kits, skirting, and rear spoiler - RM 2,500
• LED scuff plates - RM 260
• Floor lighting - RM 240
• Coil mats with mesh top - RM 180

Other than accessory add-ons, there are also much needed insulation improvements that you can opt for. The door insulation costs RM 445 while the hood insulation costs RM 72. Not a bad price for improvements in comfort levels because the Myvi is not the quietest car on the market.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre 2NR-VE engine that produces 103 PS and 137 Nm. The engine is mated to Perodua’s new D-CVT similar to the Perodua Ativa.

The 2022 Perodua Myvi also comes with plenty of modern safety tech, known as the Perodua Smart Drive Assist (PSDA), that could rival a Honda City RS.

In case you’re wondering PSDA is the new upgraded ADAS suite. The Perodua A.S.A is now part of the PSDA umbrella and is one of four assist packages. The four safety packages include:

• Perodua A.S.A – Pre-Collision Braking (otherwise known as AEB), Front Departure Alert, Pedal Misoperation Control
• Driving Assist systems – Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Control (LKC), and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)
• Parking Assist systems – front and rear corner sensors, reverse camera, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
• Headlamp Assist system – Auto High Beam (AHB)

Our test unit is finished in Perodua’s new Cranberry Red option that is available only for the range-topping Advanced (AV) variant. With the Gear Up accessories, the Perodua Myvi has never looked better.
