Video Review: The 2022 VW Tiguan Allspace R-Line 4Motion is as impressive as its name is long

Contrary to popular belief, the Volkswagen Tiguan is the most important model in Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) line-up. No, it isn’t the Mk8 Golf GTI regardless of your arguments. And this, the longwinded 2022 Tiguan Allspace R-Line 4Motion is the flagship of that range.

The Tiguan is VPCM’s best-seller, accounting for over half of its sales here.

You see, there isn’t much else in the vicinity of RM 220,000, where it plies its trade, that’s able to deliver the performance, looks and functionality that the Tiguan R-Line does.

This probably explains why VPCM brought in the facelift a brief 2 years following its launch here and staying true to the belief of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” the refresh exercise doesn’t try too hard as Greg makes clear in the video.

Most of the refresh exercise is on the cosmetic side with a hint of better equipment where it matters.

Apart from the reworked front bumper, the headlights sport redesigned LED projectors with an illuminated light bar stretching across the top of the grille. A nice, classy touch is the redesigned R-Line emblem on the corner of the grille that’s now much more elegant looking.

At the rear, the taillights are IQ LED units and the lower fascia of the rear bumper has those fake exhaust tips that’s exclusive to the R-Line.

The wheels are 19-inch Valencia rollers wrapped in Pirelli rubbers. That tailgate is a handsfree piece of kit. Swing your leg below the rear bumper and it’ll pop open for you. Once that’s been done, you’ll find 230-litres of space with all 3 rows up. Drop the last row and it climbs to 700-litres. Need more? You can lower the second row as well for a maximum of 1,775-litres.

In the cabin, the infotainment is a Discover Pro system accessed via a 9.2-inch touchscreen that features wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Your favourite tunes are delivered by a Harmon Kardon sound system.

Interestingly, the air-conditioning and steering-mounted controls are now capacitive touch items. Lastly, the instrument cluster is a digital 11.7-inch screen, much like the rest of the Volkswagen range.

No, we haven’t forgotten the most important part, the drivetrain. The 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-4 makes 220 PS and 350 Nm that is sent to all four wheels via a wet clutch 7-speed DSG.

Apart from the Dynamic Chassis Controls (DCC), there’s also a rotary selector knob to switch the different off-road modes of the 4Motion system.

Lastly, the Tiguan Allspace R-Line 4 Motion comes with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty.

Learn more about it in the video below as Greg takes us on a walkaround and quick driving impression of the sexy SUV.
