Following last week’s buying guide on highly-recommended tyres for 13- to 17-inches, as promised this week’s follow up is on SUV tyres.

If you didn’t know, SUV tyres are a little different from passenger cars’ due to their larger size and heavier construction.

Recommendation

SUV tyres are different in a few ways: chunkier tread patterns (to suit occasional off-roading), have a heavier load rating (because the cars carry more load), harder rubber compounds and taller sidewalls.

Balanced Tyres

They're usually good all-rounders, capable of doing some light off-roading but it's better to stick on the roads with them.

Pros: Commonly available, good all-rounders
Cons: May not be the best at any specific scenario

All-terrain

All-terrain tyres are SUV-only tyres that have increased capabilities for off-roading. They provide more grip on loose surfaces (think mud or sand) than conventional tyres.

Pros: Good off-road ability and grip
Cons: Noisier and stiffer ride, less comfortable
