They’re the only part connecting you to the road yet so easily forgotten. Tyres are one of the most important parts of your car, so take care of them through these three simple steps and they’ll take care of you.
They’re the only part connecting you to the road yet so easily forgotten. Tyres are one of the most important parts of your car, so take care of them through these three simple steps and they’ll take care of you.
1. Don’t forget to inflate!
It’s a simple tip but one of the most important things you’ll need to know - inflate your tyres! It’s super simple - just know the basics of your tyre size and follow the correct pressure guide, usually located on the driver’s door pillar. It’s just a matter of ‘hose, meet tyre’ and you can do all four sides in a minute.
It’s best to inflate every couple of weeks. Why is this important? Running over or underinflated tyres can lead to a host of problems - from worse wear, bad fuel economy and even blowouts.
2. Maintain your tyres!
Contrary to popular misconception, tyres are not ‘fix and forget’. The most common problems you should look out for are tyre wear (botak) and cracking sidewalls - problems you can mitigate before they get worse just by checking your tyres before you drive out.
Also, set reminders to get your tyres balanced, aligned and rotated. Not doing so will mean faster wear and worse handling, and this equals waving away extra money due to replacements and repairs.
3. Remember that you have a spare!
Very important! Cultivate the habit of checking your spare and inflating if necessary every time you pump your tyres.
They're usually in the trunk so they won’t degrade as much as currently installed tyres but it’s wise to check them every once in a while for cracks and other issues.
If you don’t have a spare, usually you’ll get a tyre repair kit in place. There’s zero need to do race-car style weight reduction - keep your spares and kits in your car in good working order. You’ll never know when you’ll need them.
To sum up…
If there’s no better reason, taking care of your tyres helps you save money and through better fuel economy and spending less on repairs.
If you have to, set reminders - you’re only doing the right thing by saving money and keeping our roads safer for all.
