Fast & Furious franchise superstar John Cena ditches muscle cars for a Honda Civic Type R in real life

Wrestling superstar and now silverscreen action star John Cena is the latest big name to join the mind-boggling Fast & Furious franchise but unlike the muscle cars his character throws around, he’s gone the opposite direction in real life by daily driving a 2020 Honda Civic Type R FK8.

After catching his performance as the long-lost brother of Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto in the Fast franchise, many would’ve pegged him as a muscle man as well. That’s not to say that like all petrolheads with deep pockets, his garage is filled with a tonne of special cars… mostly of the muscle make, but he has an affinity for the humble Civic Type R.

The Peacemaker star made the revelation on the Whiskey Ginger podcast as host Andrew Santino poked his brain about his interesting car collection. You can skip to the 1:09 hour mark to hear him justify the Civic.

Having an estimated net worth of over $80 Million USD (~RM 350 million), Cena’s pride and joy is a Lamborghini Countach that he still owns. He preferred older cars but as he explained, they’re also unreliable. Pissing engine oil on the garage floor is a monthly routine. Hence, why he loves to jump into his Boost Blue Civic Type R.

Not sure if big brother Dominic would be caught dead behind the wheel of a Civic Type R.

“I like archaic stuff but it’s also really unreliable, my daily driver is a Civic Type R. It’s got the technology, it’s got a third pedal, at 145mph (230 kph) it’s stable, and it goes. It’s got seats in the back I can actually pick people up,” he said.

“If you have a purse in a Countach, you’re screwed, and they are a little bit rough around the edges. The clutch is a dogfight, and it’s really tough to get these things running right like they’re always in the shop because it’s leaking some sort of fluid somewhere. Yeah, if I actually need to drive a car on a distance more than like 10 miles, it’s the Civic Type R,” he added.

A quick glance through Cena’s Instagram makes it quite clear that the wrestler has quite a soft spot for the Japanese marque. He’s dropped appreciation posts for Honda legends such as his own Civic Type R, an Integra DC2 Type R, a Honda N One and even a Club Racer Edition S2000.

With the 10th installment of the Fast franchise upon us, dubbed Fast X, you can be assured Cena will be having the back of his onscreen brother Dominic behind the wheel of a muscle car but who knows... maybe his Civic Type R might make a cameo.

Apart from the Countach and Civic Type R, Cena’s collection includes the likes of the following:

  • Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (2009)
  • Plymouth Road Runner Superbird (1970)
  • 1989 Jeep Wrangler (first car bought with WWE salary)
  • Lamborghini Gallardo
  • Ford GT (2017)
  • Corvette InCenaRator (custom Corvette)
  • Dodge Viper
  • Ford Mustang Saleen Parnelli Jones Limited Edition
  • 1970 Buick GSX
  • 1991 Lincoln Continental
