What kind and size of generator should I get to be able to run the AC for my travel trailer? I want a quiet one, that is powerful enough.

The quick answer is a Harbor Freight in tool predator 3500 W inverter generator. --------- With that said if you want a more detailed answer it all depends on the size of your air conditioner and how often you plan to use the generator to run it. If it's a small 8000 BTU you might get away with a single 2000 watt generator but you will be taxing it.. For example the Honda EU 2200 has a maximum momentary starting capacity of 2200 W but only 1800 watts running. In other words it can withstand 2200 Watts for a few seconds without blowing up, They claim it will provide 1800 watts continuous at sea level but that somewhat misleading. It won't last long at 1800 on a continual basis. Keep in mind that unlike a commercial Duty Onan generator you never want to run an inverter type generator at full load for any length of time as you'll destroy them relatively quickly. At best you want to run them at about 50% of their rated output. Keep in mind these small inverter generators don't have oil filters so you really want to change the oil about 3 times as often as they recommend depending on how dusty of an environment you're running them in. In general I recommend changing the oil at 50 hour intervals and no more than 100 hours intervals. Basically to get the longest life out of your inverter generator you don't really want to run it much more than about 50% load or 900 W continuously for the Eu2200i, and more importantly you definitely don't want to rely on that 2200 watt Peak rating very often. Trust me Honda inverter boards are very expensive to replace. If you have a standard 13500 BTU or 15000 BTU air conditioner about the only way you're going to start it on a standard suitcase generator like a Honda EU 2200 is by installing a soft start on the AC unit. With that said installing a soft start is probably a good idea anyways is it reduces the inrush current by about 75%. Reducing the load on your RVs electrical circuits extension cords and plugs. But even if you install a soft start attempting to power a 13500 BTU air conditioner from a 2200 watt generator is really pushing it, you'll end up wearing it out prematurely . The reason being, it will be forced to run in full speed mode which is roughly around 4,000 RPM. at that speed the sound level will be increased to between 62 — 67 which kind of negates the idea of buying a “super quiet” generators as that's louder then a properly installed Onan microlite, the benefit to the Onan microlite is that it's a push button start you don't have to get out and set it up and it's designed to run 24/7 365 days a year and will last between 15K and 20K hours as opposed to the 1K or 2K hours you can expect from a small suitcase inverter generator. If you're stuck on the idea of buying an inverter type generator then If you can afford it I always recommend buying the larger 3000 to 3500 watt versions These slightly larger generators can easly handle the startup loads of your air conditioners and once started the generator will drop back into Echo mode and run much quieter than say a single 2000 watt generator. Some people opt to buy two smaller 2000 watt generators and use a parallel kit with them Basically a parallel kit connect two smaller generators together which almost doubles the output capacity of a single generator.. contrary to popular belief it won't actually double the power because there is some loss involved in the parallel process. A word of warning Don't under any circumstances try to hook up two generators without a parallel kit. You can't simply run two generators together without the parallel kit. I'm trying not to write a book here but this is somewhat of a complex subject with lots of disinformation being spread. As such I won't go into all the details but you can't just connect two generators together because the phase will be off between them, the end results is you'll let the Magic Smoke out of both of them. The parallel kit basically synchronizes the sine wave being generated by the generators and then combines the outputs. This might be a good way to go if you don't plan on running your air conditioner very often but it does require some set up and it does involve buying two generators. Personally if you're going to invest in two generators I'd recommend a 3500 Watt and a 1000 watt. Or a 2000 watt generator and a thousand watts of solar panels. The smaller 1000 watt generators are the perfect size for recharging an RV battery Bank while running a few lights and watching TV. Just don't try to start the microwave or air conditioner LOL I've been repairing small motor operated appliances for over 40 years, I work on Hondas, Yamaha, Generac, Onan, echo….. and now every once in awhile a HFT predictor. Over the last 40 years I've rebuilt more chainsaws, blowers, riding mowers, pressure washers and generators then I care to remember. My shop looks like the Sanford and Son of generators LOL My personal favorites are Onan, Generac and now HFTs Predator line. I know I'm going to get a lot of flack from the Honda Fan Boyz for this but Honda is purposely left off that list because they are massively overhyped and far too expensive for what they are, I see just as many Hondas in repair as I do any other brand, In my opinion as someone who's been working on these for 40 years, they have become the Sony of generators living off their previous reputation. The reason I mention my qualifications is becouse I can't stress enough don't get carried away with the Honda hype, you can pick up a generator from Generac, Westinghouse, WEN for a fraction of the cost and they're just as good. Honda generators have become so over hyped that it's Beyond ridiculous.. Don't get me wrong Honda makes fine generators but they're simply not worth anywhere near what they're asking for them nowadays. When comparing generators think about this for a moment , Westinghouse builds nuclear power plants, Generac builds backup power systems for hospitals. Honda on the other hand is primarily a small engine manufacturer not an Electronics manufacturer as such the weak point in Honda generators is their inverter boards. In my experience Honda true sine wave inverters do not handle repeated overloading very well and they don't handle continuously varying inductive loads very well. Ask me how I know, :) I actually have a big pile of unrepairable Honda generators sitting outback almost all with blown inverters that aren't worth repairing, The reason I have so many is because owners simply don't want to pay for the repair so I end up picking them up for a few dollars as spare parts. It gives me the option of offering customers reasonably priced used parts rather than the exorbitant prices Honda expects for their spare parts. Also I have the electronics experience to actually repair the inverter boards. While I'll repair inverter boards for friends and myself I don't offer this service. Unfortunately consumers not knowing any better get taken in by Honda's so-called super quiet claim. Honda generators like most quiet generators are only really quiet when they're idling at about 1/4 load.. when you actually load them down to say 50% load or heaven forbid 100% load they get just about as loud if not louder than an Onan of similiar wattage running at The same output power. The real difference is the Onan generator is designed to last 20K hours rather than a 1 or 2k hours you're likely to get from the Honda. A word about sound ratings, don't let a 3 to 6db in a sound rating sway you one way or another, what's more important is the actual tone or frequency of sound the generator makes. Different people find different tones objectionable. For example to a younger person a 60db high frequency sound might be annoying but to an older person who's lost their high-frequency hearing it's not, likewise 60 db of low-frequency might be much more annoying to older people with aged hearing than it is to younger people who listen to a lot of Bassy music. while technically a 3db increase in sound pressure is twice as loud it requires laboratory-grade equipment to accurately measure that difference. The Human ear is simply incapable of differentiating a 6db sound pressure difference. I don't care who you are unless you're 16 years old with excellent hearing you won't be able to hear the difference in 6db what you will hear a difference in is tone and misinterpret that as a sound level difference. I'm a retired Electronics engineer, I primarily focus on marine electronics and Commercial two way radio equipment and have worked as a broadcast engineer in both radio and TV Broadcasting. Nowadays to suplement my retirement besides generator repair I also repair commercial two-way radio equipment as well as Marine Electronics like radar, Marine HF and VHF equipment…. I have a moble electronics laboratory full of electronics test gear. including calibrated signal generators service monitors and Spectrum analyzers, I've had people swear up and down adamantly that they could hear the difference in 6 db of sound pressure. Needless to say they are quite surprised to learn that they can't even hear the difference in 12db of sound pressure. It's very easy to put a pair of earphones on someone, hook it up to a signal generator and feed it calibrated white noise or pink noise while varying the output by 3 to 6db. to date I've never found anyone who could differentiate 6db of sound pressure let alone 3 db in fact by the time you get to 40 you're lucky if you can hear 12db difference. Also don't get fooled by the fuel efficiency claims. The fuel efficiency claims are made based on running the generators lightly loaded. All gasoline generators whether they are inverter generators or traditional synchronize speed generators will burn about 480 mL of fuel per kilowatt-hour of electrical generation… ----------- As for my personal recommendations, Lately I've been recommending the Harbor Freight and Tool predator Series generators Over The Hondas especially the 3500 watt model, these have become so popular that they usually sell out within hours when they go on sale. You can buy this for a fraction of the cost of a similar Honda and it's every bit as good if not better. Just make sure you buy the 2-year extended warranty and if anything goes wrong they just swap it out. If you're concerned about customer service then pick up the WEN 3500 watt generator it's virtually the same but WEN offers considerably better customer service. Of course the problem with Wen is finding a service center, if you're skilled enough to repair your own they will send you the parts. On the other hand there's a Harbor Freight and Tool on nearly every street corner so swapping one of those out is fairly easy when you have the 2-year warranty. Predator generators have become so popular lately that they are now starting to outnumber Honda generators at campgrounds and RV parks and for good reason. It may seemlike I've written a small novel on this topic but I've only covered the basics. It takes years of first-hand experience working on these to gain enough experience and insight to see past the marketing hype. The bottom line is if spending more money gives you peace of mind then as the old saying goes a fool and their money is soon parted. On the other hand if you're Frugal and like get the best value for your dollar your best bet it's either the Predictor, WEN or Generac lines. One last recommendation Costco sells the A-Ipower inverter generator. It's a Yamaha powered 2000w peak 1600 W running inverter generator of very good quality. This will start your air conditioner as long as you have a soft start installed in your AC unit (highly recommended) The only reason I recommend this generator is because Costco has an exceptional no questions asked return policy. Last time I was there it was on sale for $399 at that price I wouldn't hesitate picking one up. You could easily buy two of these and the parallel kit for less than half of the Honda 3 kilowatt generator. Also unless you're buying from a reputable dealer be very wary of used generators in particular Hondas as you have no idea how often the oil has been changed or how hard they've been run. Quite often these Honda generators have been purchased by General Contractors and used in housing construction which is the worst possible use for an inverter generator, Inverter generators do not tolerate continuously varying inductive loads, for that purpose a contractor's grade generator is far superior and will last much longer. A quick way of blowing a Honda inverter is by loading it down with construction tools like skill saws and so forth, the inverter board simply cannot tolerate continuously varying inductive loads.

What make are the quietest generators?

I assume you mean gas powered generators. I haven’t tested any make, but from the many I’ve been around I’d say Honda generators are the quietest, or right up there. I believe each manufacturer will have sound levels available as noise is a concern for most buyers. Just make sure their data is comparing apples to apples; that is: at what load are they testing? At full power, 1/2 power, or 1/4 power. And remember sound is measured in units called decibels (dB). The higher the decibel level, the louder the noise. But it’s not like a temperature scale (linear). On the decibel scale, the level increase of 10 means that a sound is actually 10 times more intense, or powerful. So a generator with a sound level of 68 dB is ,ten times as loud ,as one with a 58 dB level. Big difference to the ear.

Dominant frequency in generators is the engine firing frequency which is f=(engine rpm x number of cylinders)/120 for a 4-stroke engine. Two-pole generators without a gearbox have to work at 3600 rpm for 60Hz current output and these engines are single-cylinder, so f=30Hz. In this area, loudness increases heavily with frequency, hence, low-rpm generators will sound quieter than high-rpm ones at the same dB rating,. Which is better for my Travel Trailer RV, an inverter generator or a generator?

For those who don’t know, I will quickly explain the difference between an inverter generator, and a generator. A generator, sometimes referred to as a “contractor” generator or an “open frame” generator is a large, powerful generator that is designed for use with power tools, lights, and other construction equipment, and is typically seen in use on construction sites, and used for backup residential and commercial power. They provide high bang for the buck, and a low cost-per-watt. They are also extremely loud, typically producing noise levels equivalent to a lawn mower. Not something you want running in a campground with other campers around! If you’re out boondocking in the middle of nowhere, and you don’t mind the noise, then one of these generators might be just the ticket. You can purchase a 4000W “contractor” generator for around $450-$500 in the US. An inverter generator does not directly generate AC power. Rather, the engine spins a generator that produces 12-volt DC power, and then uses a pure sine wave inverter to convert to AC power. This solution allows the generator to be lighter, smaller, and quieter, as well as being more fuel efficient. Many inverter generators are so quiet you can hold a conversation right next to them! Additionally, they produce clean power that can run anything that would normally run on AC power, as long as it is below the generator’s power output. They are typically quite a bit more expensive than a “contractor” generator, but may be worth it if you plan on using it frequently. Plan on spending at least $500+ on a 2000W inverter generator from a reputable manufacturer. And, one last note on how big of a generator you need: First let’s take a look at the AVERAGE wattage draws for appliances in your RV, or appliances you would typically use in one. Note these are only typical averages, and you should check the label or owner’s manual for your appliances to double-check. Microwave: 1300–1500W Television: 30–100W Hair Dryer: 50–1500W, depending on heat/fan setting Electric Space Heater: 1500W on high Laptop Computer: ~100W Air Conditioner: 1500W running, can be double or triple that momentarily on compressor startup Converter/on-board battery charger: 450W Smartphone/Tablet Charger: 10–20W Oscillating Fan: 75W I would not consider a generator under 2000 watts for most RV uses. A 2000 watt generator will allow you to run the microwave, recharge your batteries, and run other devices, but not necessarily all at the same time. Anything under 1500W will not allow you to run some of the higher-drain devices in your RV. A generator under 1500 watts will realistically only be useful for running laptops, televisions, and recharging batteries. If that’s all you want to do with it, then that is absolutely fine as well! But, RVing is addictive, and you’ll probably find you want more power at some point. I would strongly consider using an inverter generator for any RV application. They use less fuel, are quieter, lighter, and provide cleaner power. The only real downside is price. If you want to run your air conditioner, you will need a generator that produces at least 3000 starting watts, and 2600–2800 running watts, for a standard 13,500 BTU RV A/C. If you have two air conditioners on your RV, you will need double this wattage, so a 6000 starting watt generator would be a minimum. It is difficult to find inverter generators in this power class, but they do exist, and are very expensive. In terms of brands, I would look at Honda, Yamaha, and Champion. I have personally owned both a Honda 2000 watt inverter generator, and my current generator, which is a Champion 3100w. The Champion 3100 watt, which came with electric and REMOTE start cost less than the Honda 2000 did, and has been utterly reliable for the two seasons I have used it to power my travel trailer. I went with the 3100 watt because I wanted to be able to run my air conditioner. I can run the A/C and the television, or other small appliances, at the same time, but I cannot run the microwave and A/C at the same time. My Champion produces a measured 59db at 23 feet while running my air conditioner, and just 53 db at idle. It is very quiet. I have used it while parked overnight in Walmart parking lots, truck stops, and National Forest campgrounds and have never heard a complaint. With it sitting in my truck bed I cannot even hear it running while inside my trailer with the A/C on. Their customer service has also been top notch, which is a huge plus. While the ‘4G’ hints at the fourth generation of the scooter, fact is that the Activa has remained more or less the same in the last few years. Looking at the sales numbers, the company seems to have taken a ‘don’t fix it, if it ain’t broke’ approach towards the scooter.
