BMW’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLA, the 2 Series Gran Coupe, is launched in Thailand. Currently, there is only one variant, the fully imported 218i M Sport priced at 2,399,000 baht (about RM 319k).
Power comes from a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine making 140 PS and 220 Nm of torque. All of it goes to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. 0-100 km/h takes 8.7 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 215 km/h.
Well, it does have frameless doors and the M Sport trim features sportier looking front and rear bumpers, gloss black trim pieces, and 18-inch alloys.
Moving inside, M logos are sprinkled about in the cabin like the doorsill and steering wheel, which is the chunky M Sport steering wheel. There is an 8.8-inch infotainment display and a 5.1-inch instrument cluster display surrounded by analog dials.
Unlike the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which is likely to be sold in Malaysia only as an AMG model, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a very high chance of being introduced here at a more accessible price point. The 1 Series Sedan, which is analogous to the A-Class Sedan, is only available in Mexico and China.
In other words, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is BMW's only answer to the A-Class Sedan and CLA. So we can expect a wider range of offerings for the model.
