The Ministry of Finance (MoF) is currently studying measures to widen Malaysia’s tax revenue base, including the reinstatement of Goods and Services Tax (GST). A report by The Edge quoted MoF Deputy Secretary-general Zakiah Jaafar as saying that tax reforms are necessary as Malaysia currently collects only 17 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in tax revenues, which is quite low relative to high-income nations. However, she also added that any changes in tax policies will only be implemente

In a world obsessed with race car ride and handling, Toyota is looking at another direction: cyberpunk-inspired, all-terrain handling. In a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the application describes a system where all four wheels can turn enough to make them point laterally, allowing for sideways movement, something like the Nissan Pivo pictured above. To make things simpler, imagine how a crab walks, and you’ve got the right idea! Additionally, the wheels can a

TNGA is short for Toyota New Global Architecture. It’s a much bandied about term by Toyota’s marketers and sales staff alike. The most recent model to use TNGA is the all-new Toyota Corolla Altis 2019. So what does TNGA really mean? Depending on which Toyota personnel that you ask, you will get a slightly different answer. To a Toyota marketer, TNGA is a about creating vehicles with superior ride and handling, better looking designs and better safety. It’s a set of basic building blocks of a car

Toyota’s small cars family will be next in line to benefit from Toyota’s much vaunted TNGA platform. Short for Toyota New Global Architecture, the all-new TNGA platform has been the key reason why recent Toyota models like C-HR, Camry, and Corolla have been grabbing the title of best-in-class handling away from Mazda. Currently, there are three variations of Toyota’s TNGA platform (actually there are four if you include the Lexus LS’ GA-L). GA-C was the first of the TNGA platform series introduc

The new facelifted 2020 Toyota Hilux is launched in Malaysia today and apart from the macho looks, it’s also got a very impeccable safety rating. ASEAN NCAP which conducts safety assessment for new cars in the ASEAN region has just awarded the King of Pick-ups a 5-star safety rating. The test was conducted in August 2020 and was the second assessment that ASEAN NCAP had conducted on the Hilux. We’ve already seen the 2021 Subaru BRZ making its global debut in the US, so it’s only natural to ask when the other half of the Toyobaru coupe twin will be launched. According to Japanese sources, the answer is May 2021. As before, the second generation Toyota 86 will mirror the Subaru BRZ’s mechanicals, built by Subaru to. Like the Subaru BRZ, the ‘flat-four’ engine’s capacity has been increased to 2.4-litre. The body is slightly longer and wider too, and kerb weight has been bumped up by arou

Toyota Corolla Altis Hotai Motor, the official distributor of Toyota vehicles in Taiwan has just introduced the Corolla Altis GR Sport, available as a regular petrol or hybrid variant. At a glance, the Taiwan market Corolla Altis GR Sport may look similar to the one we saw at the 36th Thailand International Motor Expo, but there are some differences. Up front, the Taiwan model gets a unique front bumper, as its lower air intake is more pronounced than the Thailand market car. The front grille ge

After decades of sitting out on the pick-up truck market, Hyundai is planning to launch not one but two pick-up trucks for international markets. The first will be a full-size truck aimed at the North American market, competing against the Ford F-150. This model will be based on the Santa Cruz concept. However, it is not relevant to our market. Instead, we will be getting a smaller mid-size pick-up truck, the sort of trucks that’s popular in our part of the world, a market that’s dominated by th

Recently, our colleague Zamil had the opportunity to spend some time in the new Toyota RAV4. Toyota’s new kid on the block is here to challenge the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5’s status quo. Powered by Toyota’s new 2.0 and 2.5-litre Dynamic Force engines, and utilising the new TNGA-K platform that also underpins the Corolla Altis and Camry, the RAV4’s recipe is a compelling one. All that being said, it really is a big ask for Toyota to demand RM 215,700 (after SST reductions) for the 2.5 variant. T

Remember the unnamed Daihatsu compact SUV that we saw at the recent 2019 Tokyo Motor Show? Well it has now gone on sale in Japan as the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize. The model is produced by Daihatsu at its Shiga plant, which also builds the same car for its parent company Toyota, which will then sell it as the Toyota Raize. For now, the Raize/Rocky is only for Japan but we are pretty certain that the same model will eventually find its way to our region. If it doesn’t appear as here a Perodu

On paper, the Toyota C-HR is extremely underwhelming and frankly unappetizing. Halogen projectors, 17-inch wheels, 1.8-litre naturally aspirated DVVT-I with measly 140 PS & 171 Nm just doesn’t quite fit the bill of a RM 150,000 SUV. Not only that, but the tight-ish interior also doesn’t quite appeal to the family shoppers – limited knee room and only 388 litres of boot space. If you’re claustrophobic like me, I strongly suggest to not spend too long in the back seats of the C-HR. Safety features

The recently announced 2020 National Automotive Policy (NAP) and recent changes in the government are not sitting well with car manufacturers operating in Malaysia. “It’s a bit unsettling. Less than a week after announcing an auto policy that doesn’t say anything meaningful, the prime minister is stepping down?,” said an executive at a German automotive brand. However, the executive remained optimistic about the mid-term prospects of Malaysia, and sees the current episode merely as a speed bump

The Honda BR-V is an entry-level, three-row seat, seven-seater vehicle. With a ground clearance of 201 mm, it rides 3 mm higher than even a Honda CR-V (even when fitted with all-wheel drive). At the same time, it’s only has front-wheel drive, with an elongated rear half that looks more like an MPV than an SUV. So what is the Honda BR-V? Is it an MPV or an SUV? The simple answer is that it’s an SUV. Honda Malaysia’s own marketing materials describe it as a crossover, which is just another way of

Honda took the covers off the all-new, fifth-generation City in Bangkok back in November 2019. If you’ve been eyeing one, you may have to wait a fair bit longer, as the soonest the new model could be introduced in Malaysia is late-2020 or early-2021. Not only has changes in the tax structure and Open Market Value (OMV) calculations delayed car launches a fair bit, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic isn’t helping matters as well. As such, the current fourth-generation City is still a viable option. Wa

If you have been following our page, you would know that the Proton X50 has been awarded a maximum 5-star rating by ASEAN NCAP. As the Proton X50 is structurally similar to the Geely Binyue donor car, one can say that this is the first right-hand drive crash test for the Geely Binyue. However if you study the ASEAN NCAP’s test report in detail, you will realize that the Proton X50’s scores is actually lower than the Perodua Aruz and 2020 Honda City – 86.54 points for the Honda City, 86.49 points

It is inevitable, comparing the recently-introduced 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross against one of the most popular SUVs around – the Proton X70. After all, seeing that the price of the top-spec Proton X70 is very close to the entry-level Toyota Corolla Cross (RM 123k vs RM 124k), cross-shopping between the two is bound to happen. Therein lies the question: for roughly the same amount of money for the top-spec Proton X70, should you, or should you not, add a little bit more money and get the 2021 Toyo
