LAMBORGHINI URUS â Overview
The Lamborghini Urus is only the third production/showroom model offered by the famous supercar automaker today, after the Huracan and Aventador. Thanks to its performance, practicality and price point, the Lamborghini has been a huge success for the company as well as dealers around the world.Total sales of the Urus model in 2019 and 2020 accounted for more than 50% of the brandâs sales, hitting record-high levels, with 2019 their best ever with a total of 8,205 units. For now, the Lamborghini Urus is only offered in one variant; no S, no Superleggera or Trofeo variants.
In this segment of ultra-luxurious vehicles, final prices are never fixed as there is a high degree of personalisation involved, as well as the place of registration (duty-free zones such as Langkawi). As such, the price is on application or P.O.A. Nonetheless, the basic starting price of the Lamborghini Urus is RM900,000 before duties, taxes and optional equipment.
Other super SUVs competing with the Lamborghini Urus is the neighbour based 20 km to the west in Modena, Bologna- the Maserati Levante Trofeo. Two legendary British marques also want a piece of the super SUV segment, with the Aston Martin DBX finally going on sale last year and the Bentley Bentayga. We would also consider the Mercedes-AMG G63 as a competitor too, albeit a little cheaper at RM1,447,000 with taxes and duties, as the G-Class has both the performance and pedigree of a super SUV.

What do the Lamborghini Urus, BMW i8 and Toyota GR Supra all have in common? They all did not deviate much from their concept vehicles that were styled and revealed five years before the production of the actual vehicle.Lamborghini first previewed the Urus concept at the Beijing Auto Show way back in 2012 and the production Urus we see today maintained quite a significant number of details first shown in the concept vehicle.
The styling team adopted the two-thirds body, one-third window ratio as practiced on the styling of the coupes. The Y-shaped air intakes upfront take cue from the LM002. Similar with the hexagonally wheel arches that house wheel sizes from 21 to 23 inches. Being one of the icons of Italy, the front fenders are also detailed with the Italian flag.

Before being actually hand made in Italy, the aluminium plus steel body shell of the Lamborghini Urus is prepared and finished by parent-company Volkswagen Bratislava. This advanced body shop also prepares the SUV bodies of the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8 and the Bentley Bentayga, all of which are based on the Volkswagen MLB Evo platform.
For that motorsport theme and flavour, carbon fibre on the side mirrors, wheel arch, and bumper highlights are available as an optional package.

The interior is the place all occupants spend the most time in and Lamborghini has prepared a long list of personalisations for the cabin. The seat colour, stitching and even floor mats are all available in a myriad of colours and materials. Perhaps to detract your occupants of its Audi origins.Of course, Lamborghini will charge you for the carbon fibre interior pack. Or you perhaps prefer open pore wood. Anything but piano black with brushed aluminium is a cost-option.
Under the dashboard lined with the softest hide lies a fully-digital TFT display with Lamborghiniâs large rpm counter. If one has been spending time in Audi interiors, the Urus feels familiar, too familiar in fact. The buttons and stalks on the steering are equivalent items from Audi, while the graphics in the supporting driving information is simply from Audi.
The interior of the Lamborghini SUV fits five with comfort, as it is after all quite a large vehicle similar in size to the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6.
The sloping roof and tight glass area does not rob cargo space, as the boot has an incredibly large 616-litre cargo volume.
Other goodies that come optional in the Lamborghini Urus include head-up display, rear seat entertainment and a Bang & Olufsen 1,700-watt 21-speaker sound system.

Lamborghini makes starting the engines of their coupes an occasion. In the Audi-heavy Urus interior, Lamborghini managed to craft the experience as well. There is no traditional shift lever or selector, but a unique large flap that confuses many first timers; that flap just does one thing- engage Reverse.Park and Manual modes are its own tiny individual switches, while D is accessed via the steering wheel right shift paddle, similar to driving a single-clutch automated transmission.
There are two large selectors next to the start-stop button, with the entire area called the Tamburo. Anima on the left controls the drive mode, which are all in Italian for that Italian flair. It is all pretty straight forward such as street, sport, race and snow modes.
Ego, or self, is the shortcut switch to access the driverâs individually configured preference for the powertrain response, steering and air suspension, each with its own selector button. Yes, a lot of occasions for doing the same things in other vehicles, and that is the Lamborghini experience.
Other optional items in this Lamborghini SUV include massaging front seats, night vision, panoramic roof and the dual-bucket seat installation at the rear.
Safety
The ADAS system offers up to level 2 semi-autonomous driving is optional, as with the 360-degree birdâs eye view camera.Infotainment
Lamborghini Urus has its infotainment system powered by its self-titled system. The system uses two screens- the upper displays navigation, media and car status information while the lower screen is the hand-writing-compatible input screen plus display for the air-conditioning system.The infotainment system adopts the architecture from the Audi MMI and is layered with Lamborghini graphics and interface plus more Italian language. It has haptic feedback for better usability.

Engine
The Lamborghini Urus features the brandâs first twin-turbocharged V8 engine with high outputs of 650 PS at 6,000 rpm and 850 Nm of torque from 2,250 to 4,500 rpm. Similar to the 4.0-litre V8 unit found in the Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the two turbochargers are arranged inside the cylinder V, creating shorter paths that dramatically improve the throttle response.However, the Lamborghini Urus does not come with mild-hybrid assistance, unlike the Audi and Porsche âcousinsâ.
The exhaust system meanwhile features an electronic controller that alters the sound power according to the Anima drive mode selector.
Transmission
The Lamborghini Urus has an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission. While not publicly mentioned, both the V8 engine and automatic transmission share many similarities with the Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.Chassis
Thanks to use of lightweight materials, the Lamborghini Urus has a kerb weight of under 2,200 kg.
Air suspension plus active roll stabilization is standard fitment, with lowering or rising according to the Anima drive modes. Here is something usually a cost-option, but standard in the Lamborghini Urus- the carbon ceramic brakes. The front ceramic disc is the largest factory-fitted disc brake, measuring 440 x 40 mm and grabbed by 10-piston calipers.
The Audi and Porsche âcousinsâ might use the same 10-piston system, but the diameter is slightly smaller.
Rear wheel steering is also standard in the Lamborghini Urus, rotating as much as three degrees in either direction according to the speed. Coupled with the variable ratio front steering rack, the Lamborghini corners with incredible precision, questioning some dubious sports cars and their sporting aspirations.
Drivetrain
With so much torque and horsepower, it is only efficient to have all-wheel traction in the Lamborghini Urus. Power from the 8-speed automatic is split to the front and rear in a standard 40-60 torque bias. The Torsen central self-locking differential can send as much as 70% to the front or 87% to the rear, whenever the grip levels require such split as well as the setting on the Anima.At the rear axle, the Lamborghini Urus features a torque vectoring differential, providing even better traction out of corners by accurately applying traction at the inner and outer wheel.
The Sabbia and Terra in the drive modes are part of the Lamborghini SUVs off-road package, among the many options available. These modes are developed for more high-speed driving on desert dunes and deep gravel, with additional protection plates fitted to the undercarriage.

A 85-litre fuel tank should be sufficient to cover most journeys uninterrupted.Explosive power with enormous elasticity from any gear and engine rpm. The energy going forward is amplified by the sheer weight of the super SUV, pinning you and your occupants into the bucket seats as you quickly reach triple digit speeds. However, the sensation is perhaps just a little faster than the other cheaper but equally impressive super SUVs such as Audi SQ8, BMW X6 M, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S.
The Lamborghini Urus welcomes all corners and bends too, as the chassis is very well sorted, even better than sports sedans.
Ride Comfort

Only marks are deducted here for the Lamborghini Urus, where ride comfort is relatively worse than its British competitors. Perhaps, this is the Lamborghini flavour and essence.Cabin is very well insulated, given its Audi-Porsche underpinnings, but with Lamborghini tasked to dial their own suspension settings, it just misses the mark of being comfortable on the rougher roads.

Objectively, the Lamborghini Urus fares slightly better than the German firepower from BMW M, Mercedes-AMG, Audi Sport and Porsche. The Urus goes just a little faster than these high-end SUVs with similar interior space.However, these are all the most powerful derivatives of their model lines, unlike the Urus that only exist as one unique variant. The allure of the Lamborghini brand also adds massively to the product.
It might not outrun the German SUVs, but everyone knows you are cruising in a Lamborghini and not suspected as dressing up a BMW X6 40i or Porsche Cayenne S.
The Aston Martin DBX meanwhile is the polar opposite of the Lamborghini, focusing on craftsmanship and the debonaire surrounding British luxury motoring.
Donât offer rides to Audi or Porsche owners though, as they will definitely tease you about the steering wheel coming from an Audi A4.
