Production of Honda S660 ending in 2022, but not before this final send-off

The Honda S660 is a cool Kei sports car, one that we nearly got in Malaysia as well as being the spiritual successor to the also wonderful kawaii Honda Beat. However, the pint-sized sports car’s days are nearing the end.

Honda announced that it would be officially ending production of the S660 in March 2022 but not before giving the lil’ roadster one final update in the guise of the 2021 Honda S660 Modulo X Version Z.

Prices for the special S660 start from JPY 3,150,400, which is nearly a million yen more than the base beta (β) grade. However, if you’re a fan of the sporty S660, you might appreciate the little details that Honda has done to it.

The S660 Version Z is only available in two colours, Sonic Grey Pearl and Premium Star White Pearl. The former is a special colour offered on this variant of the S660 but is also seen on the Civic Type R and the Thai-spec City Hatchback.

Besides, the usual silver chrome “H” badge is now painted with a black chrome finish alongside the "S660" and "Modulo X" badges. The black touches are also present on the active spoiler and the aluminium wheels.

Inside, you’ll be greeted with a unique Bordeaux Red and Black upholstery with carbon fibre-like inserts on the centre console, the instrument visor panel, as well as around the air-con vents.

Apart from those, there is also a Version Z aluminium console plaque and an exclusive portable centre bag. Yes, you can remove the centre bag and wear it with pride when you’re outside the roadster.

Underneath, the S660 Version Z is powered by the same turbocharged inline-3 660-cc engine (64 PS/104 Nm) as its cheaper, regular variants. It only comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, so this is definitely one for the purists.

Honda has not said how many units of this special grade S660 will be made but expect those numbers to be limited.

With the S660 about to reach its end, the only Kei sports car available in the (Japanese) market is the Daihatsu Copen. With sports cars slowly diminishing in sales, the only way forward might be if they started using hybrid or electric powertrains.

Honda has not announced plans for a replacement but they are running a campaign dedicated to the S660 on social media in the run-up to its final production called S660 History.
