Bermaz’s FY2021’s profit is up 30.8 percent – 2 new Mazda launches for 2021

Bermaz Auto Berhad (BAuto), the parent company of Mazda distributor Bermaz Motor, as well as Kia distributor Dinamikjaya Motors and Peugeot distributor Berjaya Auto Alliance (BAASB), has announced a 30.8 percent increase in pre-tax profit for Financial Year ending April 2021.

Buoyed by the rush for consumers to take advantage of the SST-cut (which was originally mean to expire by 30-June 2021), Bermaz ended its financial year by netting RM 2.29 billion in revenue, and RM 172.7 million in pre-tax profit.

The figures are up 30.1 percent (from RM 1.76 billion for FY2020) and 30.8 percent (from RM 132 million for FY2020) respectively.

FY2020’s numbers were poor because Malaysia experienced a 44-day total lockdown in the early part of last year, which severely impacted Bermaz’s local business.

The company didn’t mention the total unit sales registered for FY2021, but said the strong performance was attributed mostly by its Malaysian unit.

Overall performance however, was dragged down by lower contributions from its Philippines business units (Mazda, Ssangyong and Changan), which are still badly impacted by Covid-19.

Although Kia and Peugeot are now part of Bermaz’s business, the company has cautioned that it is too early for these two brands to make any reasonable contribution to the company’s bottom line.

“The Group’s business ventures into new car brands (Peugeot and Kia) and retailing of automotive spare parts are in their infant stages. Hence, they are not expected to have a major impact on the Group’s results for the financial year ending 30 April 2022,” said Bermaz Auto.

Separately Bermaz is expected to launch two new Mazda models within the next 3 months. The first is an updated Mazda CX-3 (imported from Japan, CBU). This is just a minor specs update, adding wireless charging feature and a few other smaller updates.

Next is the long-awaited Mazda BT-50, (imported from Thailand, CBU). Seeing how accomplished the latest generation 2021 Isuzu D-Max is, which the BT-50 is now based on, hopes are high for the BT-50 to add bit more ‘Zoom Zoom’ flair in Mazda’s latest urban lifestyle truck.
