China-spec Geely Haoyue to get new looks, could preview the Proton X90

Despite only being on sale for about a year plus, Geely will be giving its XXXL-sized SUV a nip-and-tuck soon, as photos depicting the revised Haoyue have surfaced from China.

Perhaps the most prominent change is the new vertical slats in the front grille, which replaces the current model’s ‘Expanding Cosmos’ grille. A new chrome surround for the front fog lights is also part of the package.

This new grille gives the new Haoyue Geely’s latest corporate look, unifying it with siblings like the Geely Xingyue L, Geely Emgrand, Geely Emgrand S, and Geely Xingrui.

Round the back, changes include the Geely wording being repositioned lower down – much like the larger Xingyue L. There is also a more rugged-looking rear diffuser piece and two muffler trim pieces at each end of the bumper.

New twin five-spoke alloy wheels and a new shade of blue complete the exterior design of the refreshed Geely Haoyue.

Powertrain options should remain unchanged. There are two powertrain options available for the Haoyue – the turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder (184 PS/300 Nm) seen in the CKD Proton X70 and the turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder (177 PS/255 Nm) as seen in the Geely Binyue (Proton X50).

Could this preview the Proton X90?

In some ways, it could. Granted, the Proton X90 won’t get the new grille, as it will get a unique Proton-designed one instead.

But, the new rear look could be carried over to the eventual Proton X90, seeing that the Proton X70 and Proton X50’s rear-end are nearly identical to their Chinese counterpart.
