Proton to CKD Geely Emgrand. Your next Preve/Persona?

At present, Proton has two ageing sedan models, the Proton Saga and Proton Persona. But that could soon change, as sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that the all-new Geely Emgrand that was introduced a year ago will be the basis for a brand-new Proton sedan.

Said sedan model, according to the source, is slated for a debut some time in 2023 or 2024.

While larger sedans are a diminishing segment, the smaller budget sedans are bread and butter for Proton, Perodua, Honda, and Toyota, so it comes as no surprise why Proton has plans to introduce a new sedan model.

Now, while we know that the Emgrand will be the next Proton sedan, it remains to be seen which Proton sedan it will replace. It could replace the Proton Persona, or the now-discontinued Proton Preve. Regardless, sources also added that studies for right-hand drive (RHD) production for the model has started.

Dimensions
Model SS11 Persona Preve
Length (mm) 4,638 4,362 4,543
Width (mm) 1,820 1,722 1,786
Height (mm) 1,460 1,554 1,524
Wheelbase (mm) 2,650 2,555 2,650

For context, the recently-introduced Geely Emgrand is longer than both the Preve and Persona, but with an identical 2,650 mm wheelbase as the C-segment Preve.

It is also worth mentioning that one shouldn’t get too hung up on whether the new sedan is a B-segment or C-segment car. Like the Perodua Ativa, it’s a new generation value-added package model that straddles between traditional segments.

As a refresher, the all-new Geely Emgrand is developed on the BMA platform, just like the Proton X50. Seeing that it is a budget-oriented model where it’s sold, it does not get a turbocharged engine; instead, it is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine that does 114 PS and 147 Nm, mated to a CVT-type automatic transmission.
