All-new 2022 Honda Civic FE – RM 3.7k to service over 5 years/100k km, RM 320 more than FC

Congratulations for reading past the headline but before we delve in a bit more on the maintenance cost, perhaps you might be thinking of getting the all-new 2022 Honda Civic FE that was launched mere days ago.

With three variants available, starting from RM 125,634, the all-new FE is notably pricier than its predecessor, the Civic FC which started from RM 109k. That’s because this is an entirely new and more feature-packed Civic with features like the brilliant Honda Sensing ADAS suite being available as standard.

Goodbye 1.8 NA Civic

That said, all variants of the Civic FE now share the same engine, a 1.5-litre turbocharged VTEC motor that churns out 182 PS and 240 Nm. If you know your Honda engine figures very well, that makes our local-spec FE the most powerful in Southeast Asia.

54 90,000 366.47
60 100,000 645.25
Total cost (RM) 3,713.78

According to Honda Malaysia’s official website, the total cost for maintaining the Civic FE at its official service centres over a 5-year/100,000-km period is RM 3,713.78. Compared to the last-gen FC, the FE is RM 324.12 more expensive to maintain.

Given how the Civic is in a bigger segment than the City, it is also normal for the price of the repair to be higher, but what’s surprising is how big (or small) the difference is.

We’ve published an article on the cost of maintenance for the City and it costs RM 3,669.71 to maintain the petrol variants over a 5-year/100,000-km duration. The Civic FE’s maintenance over the same period is only RM 44.07 more expensive.

The following is a more detailed breakdown of the maintenance costs and the recommended replacement intervals:

2022 Honda Civic FE maintenance
Parts Recommended interval Price (RM)
Engine oil 6 months/10,000 km 161.56
Oil filter 12 months/20,000 km 34.68
Air cleaner element 18 months/30,000 km 104.49
CVT fluid 24 months/40,000 km 143.89
Brake fluid 36 months/60,000 km 38.30
Iridium spark plug 60 months/100,000 km 439.35
Dust & pollen filter 18 months/30,000 km 90.76

The most expensive part to replace is the iridium spark plugs which is performed in the 60th month of ownership or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. That costs RM 439.35. Honda offers all new Civic FE owners free labour service which is applicable up to 5 times within 5 years or 100,000 km.

Civic V spec shown with 17-inch wheels

Bear in mind that these costs do not include other expenses like battery and tyre replacement. Speaking of tyres, the Civic FE’s tyre sizes are 215/55R16 (E), 215/50R17 (V), and 235/40ZR18 (RS). We have a guide for the smaller tyres but for those opting for the RS’ 18-inchers, best to prepare to fork out a lot more.

The Civic RS sits on Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (PS4) straight from the factory. On average, one tyre would cost around RM 750, so fitting all 4 would cost a total of RM 3,000.

In essence, while the recommended maintenance cost for the Civic FE for a 5-year/100,000 km duration is less than RM 50 more than a City, factor in other costs and the difference grows even larger. So if you're tempted to get the all-new Civic, make sure that you've set aside some for the maintenance bill.
