Shortcomings: Two things holding back the 2022 Perodua Alza from perfection

The 2022 Perodua Alza is a quantum leap from its predecessor in virtually every aspect; superior powertrain, sharp looks, chock-full of convenience and advanced safety features, and even more luggage space.

On the move, the 2022 Perodua Alza rides significantly better than the car it replaces, even better than the Ativa which was the best riding Perodua, until the 2022 Alza came along. The 2022 Alza also drives rather well for an MPV.

Sounds like the perfect family car? Well, as we always say, no car is perfect and the 2022 Alza isn’t an exception. Here’s a couple of shortcomings of the 2022 Perodua Alza.

Poor use of space

Where does one store pocket items, like wallet/purse or phone, securely?

In the AV variant, there is no cubby space in the centre console save for the storage compartment underneath the armrest. The tall centre stack is occupied by only the slim A/C controls, seatbelt reminder, and push start button. Beneath those is a flat panel all the way to the gear lever, which would have been better utilized as a cubby hole.

Strangely, the X and H variants do get a cut-out at the bottom of the centre stack. The question to Perodua is this, why do X and H variants get a cubby hole but not the AV?

Moving further downwards, there’s the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) and brake hold buttons, a first in a Perodua and a fantastic feature to have. But south of it is just the central locking buttons and again, flat panel all the way to the centre compartment.

Here’s another question: isn’t maximising interior space one of the reasons for using EPB? Instead of the chrome trims, a pair of cupholders would have been a much better use of the centre console. If we look at the Toyota Veloz, that space is utilized by a wireless charging pad.

Lack of telescopic steering adjustment

We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again - it's 2022, telescopic steering adjustment should be standard on all cars. This may not be an issue for individuals who are of smaller build, but even for those who are slightly above average in height will struggle to find the ideal driving position.

Telescopic adjustment should not be a luxury, but a necessity because a good driving position is fundamental.

Specifically to the 2022 Alza, it’s not as if more money has to be invested to develop a new steering column since the Toyota Veloz (the Alza’s twin) does feature telescopic steering adjustment. Something to add in the facelift perhaps? Fingers crossed.

Conclusion

The 2022 Perodua Alza is a fantastic family car. We would even go as far as saying it is the best daily driver for under RM 100k, even if you’re not looking for an MPV. It isn’t faultless but if you can live with the shortcomings mentioned above, then the 2022 Perodua Alza is the perfect car for you.
