Following D74A Perodua Axia, 2023 Daihatsu Ayla unveiled in Indonesia

The trifecta of the Perodua Axia-Toyota Agya-Daihatsu Ayla is complete with the unveiling of the all-new 2023 Daihatsu Ayla in Indonesia. Revealed mere days following its Toyota and Perodua derivatives, the all-new Ayla shares the same DNGA platform as the other two.

Though both the Ayla and Agya are essentially twins, details on the powertrain are only revealed during the Ayla's launch. Two new engines are announced, a naturally-aspirated (NA) 1.2-litre WA-VE 3-cylinder engine and a 1.0-litre VVT-i unit.

The WA-VE engine is also seen in the Perodua Ativa’s Indo twins, the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize.

Though power output has not been revealed, in the SUV duo, the unit produces 88 PS and 112 Nm. For now, only the D-CVT automatic transmission is announced at launch but the 5-speed manual transmission has not been ruled out yet.

Meanwhile, little information is known about the other engine aside from its capacity. The outgoing Ayla comes with a choice of two NA engines - a 1.0-litre 1KR-VE (68 PS/91 Nm) and a 1.2-litre 3NR-VE 4-cylinder (88 PS/108 Nm).

While the Agya has its own distinct look, the Ayla’s design is largely similar to the D74A Axia with its X-motif front grille and black DRL housing on the front bumper. Even the alloy wheels appear to have a similar design as the Axia but painted black.

As for the rear, the Daihatsu Ayla tries to be a bit more distinctive than the Axia with a couple of red reflectors stuck on the boot to make the taillights appear longer.

Moving on to the interior, the all-new Ayla seems to be more basic than either the Agya and Axia even in what appears to be the highest variant in the livestream. At first glance, the dashboard looks similar to the Agya from the floating infotainment head unit (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity) to the digital air-cond controls but it is also barebones at the same time.

There are no audio control buttons on the steering wheel nor is there a digital instrument panel as seen on the Axia.

Even in terms of safety, the Ayla appears to be basic with only passive safety features being mentioned during its unveiling. These include dual front airbags, hill-start assist, and vehicle stability control.

PT Astra Daihatsu Motor has not revealed the full variants and price of the Daihatsu Ayla but given other Daihatsu-Toyota twins sold in Indonesia, the Ayla would be cheaper than the Agya. Back in Malaysia, the D74A Perodua Axia is offered in four variants which are as follows:

• 1.0 G – RM 38,600
• 1.0 X – RM 40,000
• 1.0 SE – RM 44,000
• 1.0 AV – RM 49,500
