Daihatsu launched the 2023 Daihatsu Ayla a couple of days ago and the new A-segment hatchback has garnered a fair bit of response, not just in Indonesia, but all the way in Japan.
As a brief recap, the 2023 Daihatsu Ayla, as well as the Toyota Agya, are sibling models to our D74A 2023 Perodua Axia, all of which are developed on the same DNGA architecture and share similar powertrains.

According to a survey conducted by Japan’s Kuruma News, Japanese are actually surprisingly receptive towards the Daihatsu Ayla.
“I think this will sell well in Japan”, said one user, while other mentioned that they hope Daihatsu will offer the Ayla in Japan.
“If there’s an MT model, it is possible to revive a sporty Daihatsu,” added one user.
Moreover, some users said that they would like to see Daihatsu offering an affordable manual transmission-equipped car in Japan. The only manual transmission-equipped car that Daihatsu currently offers in Japan is the Daihatsu Copen, which is priced from JPY 1.9 million (~RM 64k).

Some users in Japan complained about the high prices of new cars in recent years, and they hope that the Ayla, if introduced in Japan, could buck that trend. If the price of the Ayla is converted directly from Indonesian Rupiah to Japanese Yen, the A-segment hatchback would be priced between JPY 1.2 million (~RM 40k) to JPY 1.7 million (~RM 57k).
These comments by Japanese users are a classic example of people wanting what they can’t have. Similar to the City Hatchback, the Daihatsu Ayla looks very different from the regular boxy-looking Japanese cars, and that could be enough of a purchase decision for some Japanese buyers.

With enough determination, as demonstrated by one Japanese fella who imported the previous-generation Perodua Myvi into Japan, anything is possible.
