The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe cuts a sloping roofline and its V6 and V8, now replaced with a 2.0L hybrid

Hot on the heels of the new Mercedes-AMG GLC, the performance and sports car brand has debuted its better looking sibling, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupé in GLC 63S E Performance Coupe and GLC 43 4Matic Coupe.

Mechanically, both are identical to the boxier GLC and the GLC Coupe sets itself apart with a sporty silhouette formed by the sloping roofline to the rear. The headlights connect to the top of the AMG-specific grille to emphasise the width of the vehicle. It also carries the AMG front apron in jet wing design with large air inlets, vertical fins and additional flics sets a striking front façade.

At the rear, the two-part taillight with a darker connecting element in between lends it the appearance of a single piece that stretches across the rear.

In the interior, AMG seats in Artico man-made leather / Microcut AMG microfiber with unique graphics and covers provide a sporty touch. There are also optional upholstery made of leather and Nappa leather with an embossed AMG coat of arms on the front headrests is available. The top-of-the-line AMG performance seats can also be optioned.

No AMG driving experience is complete without holding onto the AMG Performance flat-bottom steering wheel that’s standard for both variants. The aluminium shift paddles and 2 round AMG steering wheel buttons enable quick and precise operation of various driving dynamics functions and the AMG Dynamic Select driving modes.

The MBUX infotainment system includes various AMG-specific displays and functions. Exclusive to the AMG variants is the “Supersport” style that offers the possibility of displaying various content via a vertical structure.

Completing the interior is the AMG Track Pace data logger for racetrack use. While it’s standard on the GLC 63 S, it’s only optional for the GLC 43.

Under the hood, as mentioned earlier, both are identical to their GLC counterparts. That sees us bidding goodbye to the V6 and V8 engines from its predecessors. Instead, they get the same M139l (the l means longitudinally-mounted) engine that transforms the GLC 43 into a mild-hybrid and the GLC 63 into a PHEV.

In the GLC 43, the electrified combination delivers 421 PS and 500 Nm of torque. It’s supplemented by a 48 V mild hybrid system with a belt-driven starter-generator that delivers a 14 PS and 150 Nm boost.

That’s the same setup in the C43 4Matic as well, meaning there’s a 4 cm electric motor integrated onto the turbocharger shaft between the exhaust and compressor side.

The main purpose of the tiny electric motor, powered by the 48V architecture, is to spin the shaft up to speed quicker at lower revs to the point that the exhaust gas flow is sufficient to take over. This improves throttle response and low-end drivability.

In the top dog GLC 63S E Performance Coupe, the numbers grow significantly to a monstrous 680 PS and 1,020 Nm of torque, courtesy of a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Also taken from the C 63S E Performance, the same M139l engine now has a larger turbocharger with an integrated electric motor strapped onto it. In this case, the electric motor in the turbo is powered by a 400V system.

On its own, the 2.0-litre engine makes 476 PS and 545 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful production 4-cylinder in the world.

An electric drive unit (EDU), dubbed a P3 hybrid layout by Mercedes-Benz, gives us the insane total output.

The EDU is an electric motor at the rear axle that generates 204 PS and 320 Nm of torque. A 2-speed gearbox helps make better use of the power with the second gear kicking in around the 140 kph mark with an electronically controlled rear axle differential lock added into the mix as well.

In the GLC 63, a high-performance battery with a capacity of 6.1 kWh forms part of the PHEV system and allows a pure-electric range of up to 12 km. The battery is directly cooled and can be recharged via braking recuperation or the 3.7 kW onboard charger that plugs into a home wall outlet.

Both variants get the 9-speed AMG Speedshift MCT 9G. Essentially an automatic to handle the immense torque, the transmission does have a wet multi-disc start-off clutch.

Power goes to all 4 wheels in both SUVs but they do so differently. In the GLC 43 Coupe, the AMG Performance 4Matic system can send up to 39 percent of torque to the front while the more powerful GLC 63S gets a fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ setup.

The GLC 43 does the century sprint in 4.8 seconds and tops out at 250 kph while the GLC 63 registers figures of 3.5-seconds and 275 kph.

AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping is standard but the GLC 63S benefits from the addition of active roll stabilisation.
