Anthony Loke: No plans to increase speed limit to 120 km/h, current limit not set by JPJ/MoT

Transport Minister Anthony Loke told the Dewan Rakyat that the government and ministry have no plans to increase the current speed limit of 110 km/h. He also revealed that the authority to set speed limits is under the jurisdiction of the Works Ministry.

This is in response to Sabri Azit (PN-Jerai) who asked about the number of speeding motorists caught on speed-trap cameras around the country along with plans to increase the speed limit to 120 km/h.

The current 110 km/h speed limit was set on 1 February 1989 and remains unchanged. Since then, our policymakers have been debating on the issue of increasing or even removing the speed limit altogether but the magic number remains the same 35 years later.

In 2023, 556,055 notices were issued for speeding via the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) cameras. The transport minister also revealed that most speedsters were caught at KM 382.8 of the North-South Expressway (Southbound) near Behrang with 98,911 notices issued between June and December.

Loke also said that most motorists would reduce their speed just before the speed cameras to not get caught.

“The Road Transport Department (JPJ) found that drivers slow down their vehicles in areas with cameras as notices were put up about 2 km before the location of the cameras,” he told Dewan Rakyat.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that the total revenue from number plate sales last year reached RM 311.8 million. These included proceeds from the sale of special registration numbers (NPI) which totalled RM 21 million. The minister said that the Ministry of Transport does not benefit from any funding initiatives derived from the proceeds of vehicle number plate sales. Instead, all revenue generated is channelled into the federal consolidated fund. “However, for 2024, as announced by the
Joining the ranks of carbon-reducing pick-up trucks is this new 2024 Isuzu D-Max Hi-Lander Mild Hybrid (MHEV) concept, that's just been unveiled in Thailand ahead of next week's Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS). It's not a reality just yet, but the idea is sound and to be honest, it doesn't look that far off from production. Under the hood is the 1.9-litre Ddi Blue Power turbodiesel, paired to a small electric motor on the front of the engine and a 48V battery. Powertrain figures nor spec
In December 2023, Neta announced the completion of its 20,000 units per year capacity plant in Thailand. The company has since followed up on its progress, confirming that the first batch of Thailand-assembled (CKD) right-hand drive cars – a first outside of China – will reach customers by April 2024. The plant is in the outskirts of Bangkok, built in partnership with Neta’s local partner Bangchan General Assembly. Currently, the plant only makes one model, the Neta V-II, a facelift version of t

Though it may look like a random bit of hooning in the snow, what you’re looking at is the first dedicated BEV platform fully developed by Mercedes‑AMG, currently undergoing extreme winter testing in northern Sweden. At the same time, as Mercedes put it, the “heavily camouflaged car provides few hints to a future design”. Given its low-slung and wide proportions, we’ll take an educated guess it’s the production version of the Vision AMG concept car from 2022 - perhaps foretelling a new AMG GT 4-
