Quick Review: 2020 Proton X70 CKD, the devil is in the details

The long-awaited 2020 Proton X70 CKD (locally assembled) is now finally in Malaysia and we were fortunate to spend a short drive in it from KL to Kuantan prior to the official launch. Although brief, the Malaysia-assembled Proton X70 left a lasting positive impression. The Proton X70 was first introduced in Malaysia in the tail-end of 2018 as a fully imported (CBU) unit from China with customer deliveries started in 2019. Between 2019 to January 2020, over 29,000 units of the Proton X70 found ho

Review: Proton X70 Premium X - Is there a better SUV for the money?

Most Malaysians are no strangers to the Proton X70. There’s a reasonable number of Proton X70s on the road and with good reasons, of which we’ll dive into a little later. Let’s begin with a recap - the locally-assembled (CKD) Proton X70 was introduced early last year in 2020 with a host of updates such as powered tailgate, ventilated seats, new transmission, etc. Prices have gone down across the board as well compared to the fully-imported (CBU) versions. Since the Proton X50 has taken some of t

2021 Toyota Corolla Cross vs Proton X70 – Still want that X70?

It is inevitable, comparing the recently-introduced 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross against one of the most popular SUVs around – the Proton X70. After all, seeing that the price of the top-spec Proton X70 is very close to the entry-level Toyota Corolla Cross (RM 123k vs RM 124k), cross-shopping between the two is bound to happen. Therein lies the question: for roughly the same amount of money for the top-spec Proton X70, should you, or should you not, add a little bit more money and get the 2021 Toyo

Two new Proton models in 2020, Proton X70 CKD and Proton X50!

Proton ended 2019 on a high with 100,821 cars sold, a 55.7 % growth compared to the previous year. The company was on overdrive with 5 new model launches (X70, Iriz, Persona, Exora, Saga) over a span of 8 months. Proton CEO, Dr Li Chunrong announced Proton’s plans for 2020 at a media Chinese New Year luncheon today. We won’t bore you with the numbers so here are the juicy bits. Proton will be launching the Proton X70 CKD and Proton X50 this year. 2020 Proton X70 CKD Estimated Launch Date: Q1 202

2020 Proton X70 CKD - Which colour looks best?

As part of the new locally-assembled (CKD) Proton X70 line-up, the company has introduced a new grey colour. The new colour is called Space Grey. This bump the total number of colours up to 6 – Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey, Cinnamon Brown, Flame Red, and Space Grey. However, the new colour is still not the best looking colour for the Proton X70, in our opinion. It's a rather flat looking colour and doesn't do much to bring the X70's character lines. Of course, looks are subjective but our

Video: Geely Binyue (Proton X50) 1.5L Turbo SUV Review, Needs Proton Ride & Handling!

Malaysians are eagerly waiting for Proton's next compact SUV which is expected to arrive after the locally assembled Proton X70 which is speculated to be called the Proton X50. Although Proton has never confirmed (nor deny) whether their next SUV will be called the Proton X50, we know that it will be based on the Geely Binyue – courtesy of Proton's foreign strategic partner. We've tested the Geely Binyue in China, not to lay a death sentence on the Proton X50, but to get a first taste of what pr

Why the 2020 Proton X70 CKD no longer have an AWD variant?

Proton dropped the all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant for the 2020 Proton X70 CKD line up and some consumers are bothered by it. During the media test drive, Proton engineers explained why they didn’t offer an AWD option for the 2020 X70. The reason is simple, the Malaysian market simply does not demand for an X70 AWD variant. Of the 29,000 units fully-imported (CBU) Proton X70 sold last year, less than 4% of the customers picked the AWD variant – that’s only about 1,160 units of the total sales. Mor

Spied: 2020 MG HS spied, Proton X70 rival coming soon?

MG exited Malaysia a couple of years ago and talks of the iconic British marque returning to Malaysia isn’t new, as MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor Corp Ltd, has been in talks with various parties to re-introduce the brand here over the past couple of years. Needless to say, none of those talks came to fruition. But the recent sighting of a 2020 MG HS at a Road Transport Department (JPJ) branch pretty cements the notion that MG will be reintroduced in Malaysia. According to our friends over at F

The 7-speed wet DCT makes the 2020 Proton X70 CKD faster and more fuel efficient

The locally-assembled (CKD) 2020 Proton X70 is now officially launched and the biggest change to the popular SUV is the change to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), replacing the conventional 6-speed torque converter automatic. The new transmission bears the codename 7DCT330 and is developed in-house by Geely. It’s a wet-clutch type unit with 7 forward ratios. The DCT is quoted to be able to withstand up to 330 Nm of torque, hence 330. This DCT is used in over 10 different models across v

Review: Can the Honda CR-V still justify itself against the Proton X70?

Let's be honest here, the Honda CR-V has seen better days. Before the introduction of the Proton X70, it was the default choice for families looking for an SUV. There were many decent alternatives to the Honda CR-V - the Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, or even the similarly priced but 7-seater Mitsubishi Outlander - but none could challenge the Honda CR-V's dominance. All that changed when the Proton X70 undercut everyone else in price. The X70 is far from being a perfect family SUV. In fact, it has

2020 Proton X70 CKD 7-speed wet DCT is tested in Malaysia, lifespan of 350k km

One major highlight of the newly launched locally-assembled (CKD) 2020 Proton X70 is the adoption of a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that replaces the conventional 6-speed torque converter automatic. Most Malaysians would be familiar with the term DCT (dual-clutch transmission) no thanks to the Volkswagen DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) and Ford PowerShift that started the discussion of DCT reliability. Since then, DCTs have become something that consumers would actively avoid or at

2020 Proton X70 CKD - Worth topping up RM 3,000 for the sunroof?

The locally-assembled Proton X70 CKD is finally here, and the company has done some streamlining to the model's line-up. Previously in the Ningbo-built, imported Proton X70 model, a panoramic sunroof was available on the Premium 2WD variant, but that has since changed, now that the Premium 2WD is no longer the top specs variant. 2020 Proton X70 CKD – Is the new 7-speed DCT cheaper to maintain?

The locally-assembled (CKD) Proton X70 is no stranger to Malaysians – we have driven it and discussed about the new dual-clutch automatic, in addition to covering numerous aspects of the new SUV. Another aspect of the new X70 CKD that was a topic of debate is its maintenance cost – earlier, we reported that it costs nearly RM 5,000 to maintain the X70 over a period of 5 years, which is almost RM 1,000 more than a Honda CR-V. However, with the new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic in place, is it any

The C-segment SUV market is one of the most lucrative segments in Malaysia, evident by the increasingly many new models introduced by cars manufacturer, all trying to get a slice of the market. Will Indonesian buyers accept the Proton X70?

Proton ended 2019 on a strong note, firmly putting the Proton X70 as the undisputed leader in the C-SUV segment, with over 13,300 units, eclipsing the Honda CR-V’s 12,000 plus units. But does it come as a surprise at all? Thanks to generous tax incentives that nobody else apart from Proton and Perodua enjoys, the rebadged Geely Boyue is nearly RM 50,000 cheaper than a similarly equipped Honda CR-V 1.5 TC-P. On paper, Malaysia no longer have a national car policy, not for the last 20 years. The t

The Proton X70 CKD is finally here, slightly less than 2 years since Proton first introduced the imported (CBU), China-made model back in late-2018. 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross vs Proton X70:你还想买X70吗?

Proton X70 – What needs improving?

When Proton first launched the X70 back in late 2018, consumers were sceptical of the car’s Chinese roots – will it be problematic, they asked. Well, that comes as no surprise, considering the history of Chinese cars sold here in the past. With the X70, Proton and Geely hope to change the perception once and for all.
