Hyundai Ioniq discontinued in Malaysia – Goodbye fuel and safety king

For many Malaysians wanting a brand-new pure hybrid car, the Hyundai Ioniq is one of the few choices for those wanting to drive green. However, it appears that the model has been dropped for the Malaysian market.

A quick search on Hyundai’s website shows that the Ioniq is absent from its model line-up. Though some markets including Australia and Singapore have received the facelift, there has been no news for its arrival in Malaysia.

The locally-assembled (CKD) Ioniq was unveiled here back in 2016 by Hyundai Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) and came with 2 variants, the HEV and HEV Plus. Prices for the Ioniq started from RM 99,888.  

Powering the Ioniq in both variants is a 1.6-litre Kappa II Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine which is supplemented by a 32kW electric motor. This gives a combined output of 141 PS and 265 Nm.

The Ioniq is the most fuel-efficient car with a fuel consumption figure of 4.9 L/100 km for the HEV Plus variant. Besides being a fuel sipper, it is also the safest car ever tested by ASEAN NCAP with a score of 91.98 points.

Sadly, hybrid cars are not fully embraced by Malaysians so there's a slim chance for the Ioniq facelift to make it here. However, if you are still interested to get an Ioniq, maybe the used car market is the only place to get one and there are more options too.
