Vehicles: What do the letters mean when describing a car?

No way this is even a tenth or even hundredth of the ones out there, especially because different cars, manufacturers, and technologies may use the same acronym differently or be specificities to a certain make or model, but here are all the acronyms I can think of in about 5 minutes that most auto enthusiasts and mechanics will use to communicate online. 4WD = 4 wheel drive ABS = anti-lock brake system AFM = air flow meter AT = automatic transmission AWD = all wheel drive AWS = all wheel steering BHP = brake horsepower CAS = crank angle sensor OR cam shaft angle sensor COP = coil on plug CPS = crank position sensor DOHC = dual overhead can ECU = engine control unit ECM = engine controls module EFI = electronic fuel injection FF = front engine/front wheel drive FMIC = front mounted inter cooler FR = front engine / rear wheel drive OR front right (when referring to a specific suspension, braking, or drivetrain component that is located at all 4 corners and needs to be differentiated by position basically FR FL RR and RL) FWD = front wheel drive HVAC = heating ventilation/ air conditioning (not automotive specific but still referred to in cars) MAF(sensor) = mass air flow MAP(sensor) = manifold air pressure MR = mid engine / rear wheel drive MT = manual transmission OHV = overhead valve RWD = rear wheel drive SC = supercharged SCS = stability control system SOHC = single overhead cam SRS = safety response system T = turbocharged TBL = third brake light TCS = traction control system TMIC = top mounted inter cooler TPMS = tire pressure monitoring system TPS = throttle position sensor TT = twin turbo VVT = variable valve timing WHP = wheel horsepower An honorable mention goes to the commonly referred to O2 sensor but it’s just the nick-name for the oxygen sensor and since oxygen gas is actually just 2 oxygen molecules written as O2 in chemistry, this isn’t an actual automotive exclusive name but is rather a chemical formula.
