Spied: Is this our first look at the upcoming RWD, straight-6 Mazda CX-5, or CX-50?

The current-gen (KF) Mazda CX-5 turns five this year. Updates are certainly due, and since last year there's been rumours about the model's next generation, and this could be our first look at it.

Adding fuel to the fire is this set of photos from tflcar.com. This heavily-camouflaged SUV - spotted in East Los Angeles, nearby Mazda North American Operations' HQ - wears typical Mazda design touches such as the Kodo-design front grille.

Beyond that, there's more defined lines on the hood and the sides of this mystery model, a departure from the soft lines of today. The wheels are new too, and are seemingly larger than what the current-gen CX-5 wears.

What about the Mazda CX-50?

Besides the new CX-5, rumours have been rife about Mazda's next SUV being the CX-50. This is said to be a coupe-like SUV, analogous to the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLC Coupe, as well as the BMW X3 and X4.

This model is said to ride on Mazda's brand-new, rear-wheel drive platform. Apart from that, the upcoming CX-50 is also said to receive a range of straight-six engines, with engine capacities ranging from 3.0- to 3.3-litres.

Mazda’s 48V mild hybrid system is also expected to complement these engines too.

Some sources also suggest that the next-gen CX-5 will also be receiving a straight-six engine and rear-wheel drive, training its sights at the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
