Beyond the Proton X50 and X70, here is Geely's complete range of SUVs

We’re all familiar with Geely SUVs. Other than the two models sold here as the Proton X50 and the Proton X70, Malaysians also have their eye on the Xingyue, Xingyue L, and the Haoyue because everybody hopes that these models would make it to our shores one day. But did you know that Geely has 5 other SUVs on sale as well?

Geely Haoyue

To make it clearer, Geely has separated their vehicle range to the Yue/Rui series (Yue for SUVs/ Rui for sedans), Emgrand series, and the Vision series.

The Yue/Rui series is mainly aimed at the premium luxury segment while the Emgrand slots in below it as the more affordable series. The Vision series is the most affordable, or what we like to call as the ‘entry-level series’, of the pack and mostly sold in less-developed provinces in China.

Emgrand Dihao S

So, without further ado, let’s get into the list!

Geely Binyue/ Coolray aka Proton X50

With the B-segment SUV market booming worldwide, it is not a surprise that Geely’s most popular model at the moment is the Geely Binyue.

Launched in 2018, the Binyue, or known internationally as the Coolray, is the first SUV to be built on Geely’s smaller BMA platform developed for the company’s compact cars. The first international markets that sold the Binyue were Russia and the Philippines.

As you know, the Binyue is sold here as the Proton X50. The B-segment SUV went on sale back in October 2020 and now has a 6-month waiting list for those wanting to buy one.

Geely Boyue aka Proton X70

The C-segment SUV is known by various names across the world: the Geely Azkarra, Geely Atlas, Emgrand X7 Sport, and of course the Proton X70 in Malaysia.

Launched back in 2016, the Boyue was Geely’s worldwide SUV competitor as they quickly worked to launch the car in various markets outside China. By 2018, Geely reported that they have sold a total of 700,000 units worldwide.

It is pretty much confirmed that the next generation Geely Boyue will be built on the CMA platform but we don’t expect the CMA-based Boyue to be launched until 2022. So, based on our estimates, the second-generation X70 will probably only be launched in Malaysia around 2025.

Geely Haoyue aka Okavango

The Haoyue is the largest SUV Geely has in its arsenal, it is also the only 7-seater SUV that Geely has to offer.

Measuring at 4,835 and 1,900 in length and width, it measures at least 65 mm longer than the company’s next largest SUV, the Xingyue L.

Though the Haoyue made its official debut in 2020, the SUV does not ride on Geely’s famed CMA platform. Instead, it rides on the Geely CV platform, similar to Geely’s only MPV, the Geely Jiaji.

The Haoyue is currently only on sale in international left-hand-drive markets like the Philippines and Russia as the Okavango. Meanwhile, it is heavily speculated that the Haoyue will be launched in Malaysia as the Proton X90.

Geely Xingyue aka Tugella

The Xingyue is Geely’s first and currently only coupe SUV on sale. It is also the first Geely vehicle built on the CMA-platform. The model is said to have been developed in Gothenburg, Sweden at the China Euro Vehicle Technology Centre.

At launch, the Xingyue is known as the most advanced and most premium car that ever rolled out of Geely’s factory as it featured tech like a full suite of ADAS as well as face-recognition. The face-recognition system adjusts the car's various cabin settings like side mirror positions and air-conditioning settings to the driver's preference.

Geely Xingyue S

Geely most recently launched the Xingyue S, it comes with a few cosmetic add-ons like lime-green accents on the air inlets and door panels, gloss black roof and side mirrors as well as quad tailpipes just to name a few.

Like the Boyue and Haoyue, Geely aims to sell the Xingyue in more international markets. Currently, the coupe SUV is sold only in Russia as the Geely Tugella.

Geely Xingyue L

Not to be confused with the coupe SUV, the Xingyue L is the largest SUV built on the CMA platform. Remember that the Haoyue is not built on the CMA platform.

Although the 2 models share nothing in common other than the 2.0TD engine that produces 238 PS and 350 Nm, Geely decided to name the large SUV the Xingyue L to emphasise the fact that the model is built on the same platform as the coupe SUV.

The Xingyue L is marketed as the high-end flagship SUV as it features a first-in-class 100 cm touchscreen infotainment unit as part of its premium features.

Geely Emgrand Dihao GS & S

On to the only SUV launched as part of the Emgrand series. The Emgrand Dihao GS/ S is positioned below the more popular Yue series SUVs. Based on price, the range-topper Dihao S is at least RMB 20,000 (RM 13k) more affordable compared to the range-topping Binyue.

Emgrand Dihao GS

If you look at official listings, the Dihao GS and Dihao S are marketed as 2 different SUVs but essentially, the GS and S are the same model. The Dihao S is actually the major facelift version of the GS.

Geely Emgrand Dihao S

The reason why official listings include both the GS and S is because Geely sells both SUVs side by side. Note that China’s market is big enough that car manufacturers can sell older generation cars alongside the latest generation model.

Geely Emgrand Dihao GS

Powering the Dihao SUVs is the same 1.4T turbocharged petrol engine (141 PS/ 235 Nm) and the 1.5 TGDI turbocharged direct-injection engine that produces 177 PS and 255 Nm as the Binyue.

Based on size, the Dihao SUVs are longer than the Binyue by at least 100 mm but stands lower than the Binyue by 36 mm.

Geely Yuanjing X3

The Yuanjing X3 is part of Geely’s entry level Vision series. Launched back in 2017, the X3 is the smallest SUV that Geely has on offer and is mostly sold in less developed provinces in China.

For context, the X3’s prices start off from around RMB 50,000 (around RM 33k) and rounds off at RMB 68,000 (RM 44k). While the Binyue’s prices starts off at around RMB 76,000 (RM 50k).

Measuring at 4,005 x 1,760 x 1,575 mm in length, width, and height, the X3 is 325 x 40 x 34 mm shorter and narrower than the Binyue.

Like the Dihao SUVs, the X3 comes powered by the 1.4T turbocharged engine (141 PS/ 235 Nm) as the Binyue.

Geely Yuanjing X6

Yet another SUV under the Vision series is the Yuanjing X6. The model started off life as the Geely GLEagle GX7 before a facelift exercise in 2016 rebranded the model as the Yuanjing X6 instead.

Like the smaller X3, the X6 is also powered by the same 1.4T turbocharged engine (141 PS/ 235 Nm) although the X6 is much larger at 4,546 x 1,834 x 1,715 mm in length, width, and height while the wheelbase measures 2,661 mm.

Prices for the X6 starts off at around RMB 67,000 (around RM 44K) and tops off at RMB 94,000 (RM 61k).

Geely Icon

The Geely Icon (stylised as ICON) is a standalone model that is built on the same BMA platform as the Binyue. We like to think of the Icon as the edgier, more high-tech version of the Binyue, because the Icon one-ups the Binyue with things like retractable door handles with automatic unlock sensors.

The dimensions of both cars are almost the same size as per the chart below.

Though it comes powered by the same 1.5 TGDI turbocharged direct-injection engine as the Binyue, the Icon also comes with a 48V battery option that turns the car into a mild hybrid.

The Icon only just made its world debut last year, so it is still unclear whether Geely meant to launch this futuristic SUV to international markets.

Conclusion

Geely’s entire range of SUVs is made up of nine models, ten depending on whether you see the Dihao S and older GS as a single model, but only 5 of these models (Boyue, Binyue, Xingyue, Xingyue L, Haoyue) are designed with the idea of going international in mind.

Excited Malaysians have been clamouring for the Haoyue to be reproduced as a Proton here but what other SUV models on this list would you like to see be turned into a Proton? The Geely Icon and Geely Xingyue gets our vote!
