Do some research online to find out what faults are common for that model. Cars sometimes suffer common problems such as timing chain/belt wear which can lead to expensive repairs. A bad sign could be if the manufacturer had to recall the car to rectify a fault. The fault is rectifiied but is sometimes just a short term fix (Nissan Almera for example). Check basics like Are the tyres still good? Is there a spare wheel? Check brakes work and clutch operation (if you have to depress it too far to change gear, it may need to be changed) Inspect the body and wheel rims for dents and scratches. Check that there is a spare key and that it works… getting your own spare later can be expensive. Check that there is a key for the locking wheel nuts. Start the car and look in the rear view mirror is there is a lot of smoke, there is likely to be an engine problem. All lights, wipers, washers, Air conditioning, heater, door locks, radio, windows, seats etc etc are in good working order. No engine warning lights showing before or after the test drive. Do a HPI check online to make sure the car is not stolen or been written off and there is no outstanding finance or Hire purchase on it. Car drives well.. No loud noises, annoying creaks etc take hands off the steering wheel momentarily to see if it continues straight or pulls to one side. Find the VIN number plate and check the number against the registration document. Check that there is a valid MOT certificate.
