bbm supercharger Q&A Review

What is your favorite Ford V8 engine?

Q: What is your favorite Ford V8 engine? I don’t have one particular favourite, as it largely depends on what vehicle the engine shall be for, and how the mood strikes me when I think about the subject. Certain engines fit certain applications better than others. It’s hard to pass up on the supercharged 760 hp 5.2L Predator, but I’m not sure what else I’d want to see it in besides the GT500 it comes in. I suppose it would make an interesting swap into a hot-rodded ‘56 Ford pickup. 5.2L Predator The 351W type engine is an excellent platform for a high performance build, as it has plenty of aftermarket support and is compact enough to fit in numerous chassis. I like the idea of a Dart block-based 427 stroker (it comes to 427.6 with a 4.125” bore x 4.000” stroke) with something like TFS 225 heads and a stout hydraulic roller cam or built as a Clevor with CHI 3V Cleveland heads. This would be nice in any number of possible vehicles. A 1968 Mustang or 1934 Tudor come to mind. 427 stroker Windsor 427 Clevor stroker The 429/460 385 series engines have enormous potential, and a factory block can be bored and stroked to 557 ci. A Boss 429 Mustang clone with a bored and stroked 460 block and Kaase Boss 9 heads would be very cool in my opinion. This would fit in a ‘56 F100 too, but the weight distribution would not be favourable for traction. 385 series big block with Kaase Boss 9 heads If I was building a 1966–67 Fairlane or Comet, or a Cobra, I don’t think anything other than a 427 type FE engine would look right. My fantasy FE would be based on an aftermarket BBM or Genesis block, or possibly a Pond aluminum block, with a 4.25” bore x 4.25” stroke for 482 ci (and maybe a shorter stroke for a Cobra application), and Blue Thunder heads. It would look good under the hood of a hot-rodded 1957 Custom 300 too. 427 FE stroker

If money was no object what engine would you put into your hot rod?

Golly; I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one. It depends on what car gets built and how I’d want to use it, so I’ve got several ideas of what I’d like to have if money was no object and I could amass a collection. A summary of what I’d like is as follows (I don’t have time to get into detail on each one): 482–511 ci/7.9–8.37L FE Ford based on a Genesis or BBM block and BBM or Blue Thunder heads. I’d be leaning toward using a cast iron block rather than an aluminum one due to reported foundry and block issues with FE aluminum blocks, though I’d consider a Shelby aluminum block. Cars to put them in would be a 1957 Ford Custom 300, Superformance 1966 GT40 MKII, and a 1967 Ford Fairlane. If I went with the Shelby block, I’d go with a 4.250 bore x 4.250 stroke, and with either of the aftermarket iron blocks, 4.375 x 4.250 stroke. 427.6 ci/7L Ford Clevor, based on a Dart or Ford Motorsport 9.5 deck Boss 351 Windsor block with Cleveland mains and 4.125 bore by 4.000 stroke, and topped with CHI 3V heads and intake. Could either go with a QFT 850 carb or with port injectors. Would be nice in a 1970 Mustang. For a 1971 Pantera, might need to go with a 9.2 deck and injectors or cut down on the carb pad to get it to fit under the engine cover. With a 9.2 deck, I might shorten up the stroke to 3.75 or 3.875 (400 or 414 ci/6.6 or 6.8L). Jon Kaase Boss 429 style 385 series big block Ford, based on a Ford Motorsport A460 block with 4.600 bore x 4.300 stroke for 572 ci/9.37L, topped by Kaase Boss 9 heads. With a hydraulic roller cam and streetable compression, this can make at least 770 hp. To be honest, with Kaase P51 heads instead of the Boss 9 heads, one would already have a monster on one’s hands with stupid power. The Boss 429 type heads and rocker covers look so cool, though. The one pictured has electronic port injection instead of a carb. I’m not sure what I’d put this into yet. Maybe a 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. Chevrolet 6.2L/376 ci supercharged LT5. There’s 755 hp and 715 lb-ft right out of the crate. Would be pretty cool in a 1937 Chevy coupe. Big block Chevy, based on a Dart Big M block with 4.600 bore x 4.000 stroke for 532 ci/8.7L or 4.500 bore x 4.250 stroke, topped with AFR 325 or Dart Pro 1 heads. I’d consider the shorter stroke version for the sake of rod angle/cylinder wall side loading, and because the engine would be making so much power and torque anyway that it might be better to let it pull harder at higher rpm, if cammed correctly. Big blocks can be hard to hook up. Would look nice in a 1969 Chevelle or a 1969–70 Nova. Chrysler 6.2L/376 ci Demon (the Hellcat is pictured, but they look similar). The Demon, which makes in excess of 800 hp, would be the natural candidate for a 1971 Dodge Demon. It would need a tube chassis, full cage, and 4 link to work. The Demon isn’t available as a crate engine, so one would have to wait for someone to wreck their late model Challenger Demon. The 707 hp Hellcat is available as a crate engine, though, and I think it’s already a handful. Chrysler LA type stroker small block based on a Ritter Racing block with 4.125 bore x 4.000 stroke for 427.6 ci/7L, topped with ported Indy 360–2 heads. This would be a nice mill for a 1969 Plymouth Barracuda or 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger. 572 ci/9.37L Chrysler Hemi, based on a BMP block with 4.500 bore x 4.500 stroke, and topped with Mopar Performance or Edelbrock Victor Jr. Hemi heads. Something like this would be great in a 1941 Willys or a 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda. Pontiac based on an IA2 block, topped with worked over Edelbrock RA4 type heads. I’d go with a 4.375 bore x 4.25 stroke for 511 ci/8.37L. Injected like the one pictured would be nice. I’d drop such an engine into a 1970 1/2 Firebird Trans am, and a 1969 GTO. A 1938 Pontiac would be cool too. So would a 1957 GMC pickup. 2009–2015 Ferrari 4.5L V8 from the 458 Italia. I don’t know what I’d put it in, but it’s a jewel that needs to be in a hot rod like a ’32 Ford with the engine exposed. AMG Mercedes 6.2L/379 ci M156 engine. I’d plug one of these 518 hp mills into a 1970–1972 Mercedes 280 SL coupe, like Mechatronik does with AMG 5.5L engines. I like the old M-Bs, with the classic grille, tasteful styling, solid build, and classy interior. It would be a nice sleeper. You’ll note that I didn’t list any 1200 hp twin turbo monsters here. I’d like my cars to be drivable and have useable power, and there’s only so much a street car can put to the ground. Something like the lightweight ’71 Demon with the 808–840 hp Demon engine would already be crazy enough.
