paddle shifter extenders Q&A Review

Which car should I choose, Audi A7 2012 or Audi A6 2015?

Without getting too technical and i will just talk about petrol models , not diesel . The A7 is a fine car with plenty of trunk space , very comfortable to sit in , it handles like a touring car and has a terrific GPS and handles well . It’s earlier model was a V6 3.0 lt Quattro engine with a supercharger , develops 230kw , which is up there with the V8’s . It has 8 speed tiptronic , but it also comes with something called Audi drive select . This drive select allows you to select different driving modes , Auto , dynamic , comfort , individual . This also allows you to control how the transmission responds , steering wheel , throttle pedal . As far as getting power down to the ground , the quattro all wheel drive , sends 60% of power to the rear wheels but depending on the road you are travelling on , it can shift the traction to other wheels , for better grip and cornering ! The ride itself is very quiet and comfortable , and as a gimmick Audi has installed an integrated spoiler that extends at 80mph to improve high speed aerodynamics , then retracts at 50mph ( Like Porsche ) . I guess depending on mileage and condition , one can be bough anywhere between $12,000 - $28,000 . Overall a very good car , my only gripe is , to me it looks like a toyota camry , but you may see it differently ! The A6 is also a fine car, it comes with a quattro 2.0 lt N/A , front wheel drive It has all the new safety features like , parking sensors front and rear, and rear camera , night vision and HUD . The transmission is a continuous variable transmission CVT , it also comes in sport mode with steering wheel paddle shifters . These models can be purchased between $12,000 - $34,000 . The A6 in the basic format is a good reliable vehicle , but misses that oomph! That you get with a turbo . Having said that there are also A8’s with V8’s or TDI’s which is more on the sportier range . I guess it’s all up to you , but i do envy you finding the right one ! Cheers Rob

What is your dream car? Will you ever own it?

That is a tough question, as from what I loved has changed from brand, I was truly in love with the Ferrari Enzo, and did follow Ferrari vehicles for a couple of years, until I lost touch with them. I have moved my attention to Porsche, they have some amazing vehicles, and one of the main vehicles I truly adore is the Porsche 718 Cayman S at the minimum. What draws me towards the Cayman is the styling, the exterior, the interior, as if the vehicle has been handled with love. Every detail, just reminds me of a nice and curvy model, something you can stare at for hours, as what draws most of us, that hourglass shape. Now the vehicle may not be the most powerful, may not be the quickest, but it truly looks a lot of fun to drive. Now there are 911 models at the minimum the Turbo, the vehicle looks good, but has been carrying the identifying 911 look for years, but the styling does not speak to me, even the GT3. Then I know Ferrari has also made some nice vehicles such as the F430, 488 Pista, 812 Superfast, these look great, but have a beast under the hood that wishes to explode with raw power. Yes Porsche has that too, but a bit more tamed, but also wishes to growl and howl. Further more to extend the list, are the Mercedes Benz AMG, the full on AMG not the triple digit AMGs but the duals. At the current time looking at the A45 AMG hatch or the GLA 45AMG, both vehicles look amazing, yes I could also have said the SLS or the AMG GT, but again not really my type, or there is also the S63 AMG coupe that is just mind blowing. The sound is great, especially when the system opens the pipes, the in-line 4 or the growling V8, with the exhaust pops, is just mouth watering. These are currently my dream vehicles, mainly the Porsche Cayman and the listed Mercs, but in the future will these be obtainable, with how fast technology is changing and electrical vehicles, I guess I am not going to be able to get the fun combustion engines. Not to mention having a manual gearbox just for the kicks. I know the Mercs have paddle shifters, but the feeling is different, it’s computerized, but there is still a difference with full auto. Being able to drive in manual mode, being in control of the vehicle is a great feeling. Now the times are changing and going to boring electrical vehicles, yes there is instantaneous torque and does not back down, turbo lag and other lag would be unheard of, but that was what made driving fun, and the technologies trying to up the lags, different ways to manage boost, that is all great. But yet we are moving to an electrical age, the rumble of the engine will disappear. Also the vehicle I currently drive, I do notice the turbo lag and the max load, although the engine is small and the turbo just an economic addition, I still get pleasure out of it. The vehicle is an Opel Astra 1.4 Turbo DI i4 140hp, 2012. I’ve got years in front of me as I am still a student, but once life catches up, I am afraid it’ll be fully electrical, and my love for the combustion engine would be limited and possibly not allowed to be on the roads. And an all electric vehicle, yeah that is the future possibly, but does not intrigue me.

How can I learn to be a very skilled driver?

If you feel frustrated by other people’s driving, their lack of attention, just moving the wheel…and say they drive? These work for me…proven. First; Drive and only drive!, don’t do anything else. When you get into a car there is very high possibility of an accident, always! Concentrate on driving, that’s what professional race car drivers do. Second; Check car periodically , as if “going to race check”, tire pressure and condition head the list, wipers and lights follow. Fluids and maintenance, don’t step on it with dirty oil, for your peace of mind. Third; once you get in the car verify, or re-align rear view and side mirrors, having “fish eye view”, mirrors now, is common if you don’t have, install, they’re inexpensive. Adjust your seat to provide perfect leg and arm reach without having to stretch, or extend affecting all the functions to drive. Fourth; Driving is not racing but many racing techniques can be applied to your daily driving with much success. However let me be clear, racing drivers only drive, nothing else! Five; Let’s start. You can get faster to anyplace on a straight line, the same applies to roads and you don’t have to step on it. I use alternate routes only when obstructions like an accident, construction etc. are in my trajectory. Six; Constant lane changing, looking for a better spot, will bring stress to your driving and additional wear to your car. A little patience, and no stress and you’ll see the lane changers staying behind, or crashed, if by any chance he is ahead, so What!, he’s stressed, you are not, a couple of seconds or a minute in the end is just a few car lengths, you!, are not on a race, maybe he is but you are not. Seven; Tailgating will make you slower by having to continually brake and accelerate to the whim of the car in front instead of keeping a fair distance and keep a steady pace, Steady is Faster! To keep very close to a car in front requires nerves of steel, the reaction time of a race car driver and crashing the front of your car means, you are not looking up front, for me that is embarrassing. Eight; Keeping distance from other vehicles is key to getting there faster, efficiently. Space , keeping your distance brings quick and easy decision making “reaction time”, crucial when trying to get out of the way, for example a stalled car, everybody panic stopping, you had car length, without drama, without concern of rear ending the car in front, you have space and it is faster!, as you steer clear out of a problem or a slower car, don’t wait to be on top, to then change, with a jerk on the wheel at the last moment. I never have to back up for being to close to the car in front, just a glance in the mirror get out pass and get in another lane…then back again to my “line”. Nine; A steady foot!, a steady brake, a steady steering wheel movement, all contribute to better control and stability when you need it. Practice smooth graceful movements, without jerking, altering or forcing affecting contact to the road. Learn the curves apexes in your commutes. Whenever possible “safely” take your time lane changing,!techniques that will make your car last longer between repairs, and tire changes, ,Significantly. Ten; Holding gear, is a technique I use when you are forced to bunch up or “herding like cows”with other cars. People as well as cars tend to follow the leader, but who is the leader?, I don’t know! Keep your distance, keep your revs up, when space to pass comes up, your car is ready for a sprint, a careful sprint. Since you are holding gear, just release the accelerator and your car will fall in with the bunch speed, while engine braking, keeping distance as always and looking for the next opportunity, don’t close in to the new one in front, keep space if you don’t want him on the defensive. ,You are not showing brake-lights, ,All of this smoothly, no jerking of the steering wheel or sudden stops that indicate you are in a hurry, if not the bunch will hold you. Stepping out as soon as you can, accelerate carefully looking for cops, get distance from the bunch, release the gas a little, normalize speed again far from the bunch, back in your line. Eleven; I fool always the other drivers into the I’m ok, slow like you, then step on it to pass, if you are at a distance the space will provide better speed to pass then release accelerator again, as you gently tap on the brakes, nothing hectic!, do it smooth in control, like a race car driver. Twelve; As my general rule I maintain one car length for each ten mph, it always provides “reaction space”, and as cars speed up I, among all mentioned start looking not only with your eyes but instinct, way ahead before I get there, maybe a left turn and cars holding your traffic lane, get out before you get there, if to get out you get no pass hold it and then get behind. If I am tailgated, easy, hit the turn signal as if going to turn or change lanes and Voila, the NASCAR driver will immediately change lanes as if he’s going to loose -his- race. In almost stopped or very slow traffic, the windshield washer , to clean -his/her- windshield. Thirteen; At more than 30 mph bunching is dangerous, the slightest donut bite on a donut as your neighbor drives can get you off guard and even hit you. If you hold gear try to keep your car centered between the two cars let say on your right, you are better of when on your lane and those cars have a space betwee them, providing you lateral space. Always keep safe margins. Fourteen; The freeways. If you are going to merge and have kept distance with the car in front you will be almost at speed with approaching cars without the need to stepping hard on the gas or rear ending the guy in front of you. At speed keep your distance, if you want faster, change lanes with space, don’t get near cars in front as you come, with smooth pass earlier you don’t risk a high speed sudden braking, or steering wheel jerk that upsets your car’s stance, or loss of grip. As speed goes up, so debris! Want a broken windshield, paint chipped or get dinged by a flying rock, then stick it to the car up front, guaranteed you’ll get damage, ohhh yes you will! Bunching is so dangerous, yet people tend to bunch up, just look at the resuts of racecars in a bunch hitting each other in NASCAR. Try to always, safely get out of the bunch. Exiting the freeway at speed requires entry at the posted speed, or the one you know your car can take. Use engine braking (paddle shifters if auto), and do not enter purely braking, as you enter slightly brake, with a still lightly pressed gas pedal, this forces the car to lower as the suspension compresses, providing better grip and stability , it is called “heel and toe”, toe on the gas, heel on the brake. There are probably other things you can do or adapt. But the main problem is driving along people who are not driving, be on the lookout, check what their doing, just a glance in the rear view mirror and you can tell the texter, I get out, sprint ahead, merge back in my lane away from, the “rear ending” texter. The US invented cup holders, now all cars have cup holders, gadgets , screens, touch screens to bring comfort in your commute, however they all keep your eyes off the road. What’s with low patience, as I see cars slowing for a traffic light, or stopped, there is a need, an itch in the ass, an urgency to grab the phone to check messages or do something other than driving of being aware what is going on “around you”. At the rate technology is evolving we are going to sleep while driving, don’t stop using your eyes for looking up, front, around, everywhere. “A few minutes driving, or hours are safer if you pay absolute attention. Leave your office work to the office, same for home, to say the least, breakfast when still waking up!” Just Drive, I do it with my 6sp ‘Stang up there, “no features added”, like the labels… edit: I have to admit I have two gadgets , a forward shooting, Z Edge camera and a rear shooting Mini Polaroid cube camera, insurance for when all else fails. That I always verify before take off! edit 2: Check point of view videos of drivers in race cars, sports cars even vans among others at the “Nurburgring”, in Germany. Compare drivers. Some cars require lots of skill to drive, the steering wheel jerking are fast required corrections.

What are the disadvantages of owning a Ferrari?

I’ve put about 10,000 miles on a 458 and a modern Ferrari (2010 or later) is actually quite practical. So first I’ll start off by debunking a couple no longer valid criticisms and then dive into the couple of annoyances. Debunking Criticism Unreliable - Ferrari long had a reputation for being unreliable, but that was ages ago. The 355 was the last truly questionably reliable car and if you didn’t get the F1 paddle box it was actually quite decent. From the 360 onwards reliability has great improved. High Maintenance - Everyone has heard of the regular yearly maintenance on a Ferrari where they have to drop the engine and that routine service costs $10k, this is no longer the case. With the Ferrari 458 you actually get a 3 year unlimited mileage service and warranty package where your out of pocket expenses are $0. You can also extend this for two years for $10k which makes yearly ownership only $2k a year, which isn’t any more than you would pay maintaining a McLaren. Difficult to Drive - Again this isn’t the case as new Ferraris have so many different driving modes and intelligent computers that the cars are quite agile on the street and give you plenty of different settings for the track as well. It’s actually quite easy to drive and though I’m not a fan of paddle shifters I actually love it on the 458. Downshifting and upshifting is extremely enjoyable and because you have the amazing sound of a Ferrari NA V8 engine it’s fun driving anywhere. Storage - I think the Ferrari has ample storage space when compared to other two seater coupes. I’m able to fit quite a fair amount of luggage in the front and you have space behind the seats as well. You can’t take a lot of big bags, but if you break it up into smaller bags you certainly have great trunk space. Daily Driver - If you daily drive it the car will depreciate, but it will depreciate like any other car and I believe it is too good to not drive. So outside of depreciation the car is actually a fantastic daily driver. I find that the suspension isn’t very rough and the ground clearance is quite good even for the horrible roads of NYC. By comparison a McLaren 570s has a stiffer suspension and less ground clearance and it’s actually not enjoyable in NYC because you are always worried about hitting something with the bottom of the car. It has a big gas tank and in 6th and 7th gear on the highway you get great gas mileage so you can also do longer journeys. It has great trunk space for grocery shopping as well. Disadvantages Parking - Yes parking is a bit annoying because you are constantly worried someone will ding the car, so you kind of have to go out of your way to find a nice parking spot, but it’s not the end of the world. Insurance - This is a bit annoying as regular insurers often don’t insure cars over $150k or over $200k, but again you can easily get this done, it’s just annoying Turn Signals - The turn signals are on the steering wheel, make very little noise when activated, and where the signals come up on the dashboard I can’t see them because my steering wheel position blocks it. This is really the most annoying part of the 458 and every modern Ferrari. I rather they just have them on the stalk like regular cars, it’s so much more convenient. Sound System - It’s not bad, it’s not great, it’s just ok. Also the 458 had bluetooth for phone calls but not streaming. Navigation - Eh, it also shows up in the dashboard behind the steering wheel so it’s not a lot of information and feels like it’s from the early 2000s, but these days I use my iPhone in every car for navigation anyway. Overall Verdict With all of that in mind I think that the reputation that Ferrari has as being unreliable or not a suitable daily driver ended with the 355. From there the 360, 430, and the 458 have progressed to such an extent that it is an easy and fun car to drive daily. You have great gas mileage for long trips and ergonomics which are great as well. The car is reliable and you don’t pay an arm and a leg for service any more. I actually think the opposite. The 458, in particular, is the last mid engine NA V8 that Ferrari will ever produce. At some point in the not so distant future all cars will be electric. I think now is the perfect time to buy and drive a 458. It is the pinnacle of Ferrari’s work for the last 70 years. The engine, the note it makes, the response, and the transmission, it simply stirs the soul. I drive the McLaren 570s which is a better car in every way, but it doesn’t move me. I drive the Ferrari and I have a smile on my face like a 5 year old that just got an ice cream. I think these cars should be enjoyed thoroughly. They are works of art that you get to experience, rather than something to just look at and admire. So as long as you get a modern Ferrari you won’t have too many inconveniences and you will have the best ride of your life from a subjective feeling perspective.

Which car is affordable, fast and nice?

I like the Nissan Maxima 2009 to present as a compromise, Jack of all trades type vehicle. It's not the fastest but it's fast 0–60 in 5.7 secs, 1/4 mile in 14.1 secs. Good handling, good tire width, though stock tires hold it back in every way. It has luxury features that are more rare in its price range. Panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel/seats, leather even in base models, paddle shifters, thigh extender, etc. It is fuel efficient for the cost to buy, and for how fast it is, a bit better highway and much better city efficiency than the epa states. But it takes premium fuel. (I've driven many cars, epa is usually not so off the mark!) FWD which is less sporty but helps keep weight down. CVT transmission which some people dislike but is faster and more responsive than comparable car’s automatics I’ve driven it shifts faster than the 8-speeds in the Charger and 300. As well as being smooth, quiet and more luxurious when you want it be. Once you tap the paddle shifter it is obvious that many of the people complaining don't understand how good and sporty a CVT can be. It can simulate a 6 speed by letting you hold any of 6 shift points and it does this quite well and holds up to sporty aggressive driving. Plus shifting into sport mode approaching a stop is like a steady downshift that is easy to use for any driver. Much simpler method than shifting down through each gear. Though you can simulate that as well. And the VQ-35 engine which is known as a very reliable engine. Is what powers it all. And personally I like the look, especially of the 2009–14. The 2015 and newer model have this giant Chrome V grille that is across the Nissan lineup I don't like. But style is subjective. Thats my 2 cents. And if you want a better answer you should be more specific with your question. What is fast? (Maximum 0–60 and 1/4 mile time?) What is nice? (Stylish, aggressive looking, luxurious, comfortable ride, good handling?) What is affordable?? And does it matter if it's new or used? because that completely changes what is affordable.

Which car should I consider for a first time driver (my dad, age 59 years) as gift in India (The car wont be driven for more than 100km a week, with occasional long drive and my budget is under 10 lakhs, automatic transmission would be preferred)?

As the usage is less,, Petrol engine is advisable,. Automatic transmission definitely would provide ease of driving specially for your parents. Coming to the type of car. you have the option of Hatchback, Compact Sedan and Compact SUV. I would strongly advise to opt for a car with ,high NCAP crash safety rating, specially when your usage will include long drives on highways. As this car will be a, gift to your parents,, I assume that ,you would want the safest available car, for them. So, I would only suggest you, ,4/5 star NCAP rated cars. Hatchback: ,Honda Jazz V CVT,(4-star rating) Most spacious hatchback, will be very comfortable for your parents CVT transmission is the smoothest with no jerks Has all the expected equipment for in-cabin comfort Misses out on Push Button start and Android Multimedia System, but gets 2-din system with TFT screen and reverse camera Advanced features like Auto AC, Cruise control, Paddle shifters Honda is well known for reliability and high quality Can be assured of trouble free ownership Compact Sedan: ,Honda Amaze VX CVT,(4-star rating) Relaxed seating in the back for long journeys CVT transmission is the smoothest with no jerks Top Variant has all the features including the ones omitted above Only car in segment to get Paddle shifters Honda is well known for reliability and high quality Can be assured of trouble free ownership Compact SUV: ,Tata Nexon XMA S AMT,(5-star rating) Tata’s tough build quality, most number of safety features as standard Comes with Electronic Traction Control, Roll- over Mitigation, Emergency Brake assist, Hill Hold Control, Electronic Brake Pre-fill, Brake Disc Wiping Only car to get sunroof at this price point High ground clearance of over 200mm can tackle any type of road Very spacious and comfortable seating Facelift version is much improved and comes with more equipment Mid Level variant, but all basic features available like all power windows, power adjustable ORVMs, music system with steering mounted controls, etc. Tata has improved its service and overall quality several notches up, and Nexon is now its highest selling car(Oct2020) I would suggest that you test drive all these cars and ask your parents which one feels more comfortable to them and then decide. Also, make sure that you purchase extended warranty and complete service package so that your parents can have long trouble free ownership.

Can I drive my 2014 Sport in S mode without using the paddle shifters?

Sure, you can drive your Honda in any mode and never once placing a finger on your paddle shifters. All the sports mode changes when engaged is it extends the length for gearing to maximum revs. The use of paddle shifters is inconsequential.

What is the purpose of the S gear on an automatic gear shift?

The following pertains to the operation of my vehicle. I’m reasonably confident that your vehicle functions in a similar, if not identical, manner. However, you should refer to your owner’s manual for the definitive answer to your question. According to my car’s owner’s manual, putting the vehicle in Sport (S): Provides additional engine braking and extends lower gear operation to enhance performance for uphill climbs, hilly terrain or mountainous areas. This will increase engine RPM during engine braking. Provides additional lower gear operation through the automobile transmission shift strategy. Provides gear selection more quickly and at higher engine speeds. When the vehicle is in Sport, the transmission gear can be changed manually using the car’s paddle shifters. Note that you can also do this in Drive, however the manually selected gear doesn’t “time out” while in Sport as it does when in Drive. Hope that helps.

Is it possible for one with a high IQ to temporarily become mentally deficient due to chronic sleep deprivation?

Actually, mild sleep depravation can result in increased creativity. Navy Seals endure what is called “Hell Week.” This involves extreme sleep deprivation, starvation, and extended physical tasks. They are brave men, and most don't even make it past BUDS. They basically try to drown you. It's for the best, because you are élite. I got out of that shit, because I mastered the sniper rifle. I'm still under non-disclosure, so I can't discuss specific operations. However, my reaction time was correlated to highly exceptional to profoundly exceptional, which made me an ideal candidate to master a weapon that requires one to hold one’s breath and account for wind resistance, gravity, and leading the target, by placing the crosshairs where the target will eventually be. I was recruited by an advanced agency, and my identity was subsequently erased. I was trained to withstand multiple torture techniques by biting my tongue. I have a very high threshold for pain, and I ran a marathon when I got out. I am capable of driving High Performance vehicles, both manual transmission and automatic transmission; I also have experience driving vehicles that have paddle shifters. I lost a friend, who may or may not have been associated with MI6. I told our employers to install bullet-proof glass on the Audi S8. They were underfunded, so they did not. I was driving, and a bullet ricocheted off the chassis of the car and hit my mate in the lower right side of the jaw. He was choking and bleeding. My associates were attempting to perform CPR in the back of the car. I downshifted to accelerate more quickly. I almost blew out the engine. He died in the backseat of the car, hypothetically.

What should I consider before buying BMW 530d in India?

This my first answer on Quora. Please ignore my amateur writing and grammatical errors. I am a BMW E60 530i owner. The 5 series is one of the best car in this segment. It's a true driver's car. I have driven the F10 530D and it's amazing. The looks are just mesmerizing. Well with all the expensive tech in the car it's maintenance is also high. If you buy a brand new 530D make sure you buy the ,BSI plus package, by BMW. It's like a extended warranty. Things to remember. It's maintenance is expensive. Prices of parts are eye watering. If you damaged a tyre a new run flat tyre can cost you upto 25k. Fuel economy is not so great but have seen some giving 15–17kmpl on highways on economy mode. Avg in city is 7–9kmpl Rear leg room is not as great as E-class. Let me give you a insight how it is to drive a 6 cylinder beast. It pulls like a beast. 258hp and a massive 560 Nm of torque starting at a low 1500 RPM. It's a big car and handles like it. But not so difficult to maneuver. Paddle shifters are superb and pretty quick. That ZF 8 speed is as smooth as butter. RWD means a little fish tailing for fun ;) Timeless design. Nice steering wheel feedback.(But I still like E60 hydraulhad steering.) Boot space is enough.( A space saver wheel is going to eat around 15–20% of space.) No noticeable turbolag. iDrive is superb and very easy to use and sound system is also good. Tons of small gimmicks and attention to details. If you are confused between E-class, A6 amd 530D let me help you in that. E-class It is a chauffeur driven car. It has a good legroom and nice big panaromic sunroof. It has a nice V6 engine. It's also fun to drive but not as much as 530D. It's COMAND system is the worst. Although the speakers are superb.I personally hate it's gear stalk design and placement. But as a newer version is coming within a few months so you can wait for the new one which is going to be more expensive or take benefit and grab all the discounts on this model. Audi A6 Matrix The cheapest of the three and a very sharp looking design. It has a inline 4 cylinder engine with a dual clutch transmission. The interior is good and the MMI navigation screen is easy to use but not as good as BMW iDrive. It has adaptive suspension which is a boon for driving on Indian roads with huge speedbreakers. You can raise the car height whenever needed. The car is fun to drive but that 4 cylinder cannot match the power of its rivals 6 cylinders. Just another point. See a brand new 530D will cost you around 75 lac on-road in mumbai without even the 2–4 lac BSI plus package. You can find a 2 year old 530D for as low as 45–55 lac. I would recommend you to go for a used 530D. As you buy a brand new 530D its going to loose 10 lac value within a few hundred kilometers. Check out this link, this guy has written the most detailed review of a 530D. ,http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-drives-initial-ownership-reports/167550-bmw-530d-m-sport-f10-my-pre-worshipped-beast.html See if you have a nice big sedan already then rather put this 80 lac on a Ford GT. That car won't disappoint you. You won't be just another 530D in the crowd. It will be something new and very powerful with those American muscle car looks. Hope I could help. Have a thousand of happy miles on your new car. [Still saying buy that Ford GT do some burnouts and smoke all other cars on the road and call me for a drive ;) ]
