For a transmission line that is rated 230 kV from phase to phase, the phase to ground voltage is about 133 kV and the insulator string will consist of about 18 disks. Each disk would then have a voltage rating of about 7.4 kV. Ultimately, the number of disks will vary due to other environmental conditions like humidity, altitude, surface contaminations, etc.

(vi) The suspension type insulators are generally used with steel towers.
