Launching in Malaysia next year, all-new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton makes world debut in Thailand; 'Beast Mode' styling, new engine, and more

Yes, 'Beast Mode' is in the company's official communication for the all-new 2024 Mitsubishi Triton that's just made its world debut in Bangkok, Thailand. It's the first freshly-developed Triton – now in its sixth generation – in 8 years, and as such comes with a bed full of newness.

All prices are for the 184 PS variants. 204 PS cars are not priced just yet, engine details are below.

Blocky styling, better capacity

The design tact of the all-new Triton is blockier than the last, and most of the new touches focuses on improved visibility and utility. Up front, the evolved Dynamic Shield fascia is flanked by LED lights, together with the large headlights below them – per Mitsubishi's current design language.

There's also a new rear spoiler that improves aerodynamics, 'more durable' door handles, and wider side steps that improves water drainage. Its hood is also now designed to let the driver better see the hood line and make those tight turns.

The all-new Triton's cargo bed height is now 820 mm (45 mm lower than the last-gen model), to ease loading. The rear bumper frames now also has a frame that can also be used as a foot space.

Maximum brake towing capacity is 3,500 kg (3.5 tonnes).

Inside, the geometric shapes and high-contrast dials are said to promote visibility, along with its switchgear and touchpoints that are said to be developed with the Mitsubishi Touch approach; with a focus on grip comfort and sturdiness, the company promises these have the optimum level of sensitivity when operated while wearing gloves.

Other cabin improvements include new seats with firmer lower back support and wider shoulder areas, and a hip point that's 20 mm higher compared to the previous model to make it easier to see out of. The Triton's A-pillar now allows for wider door openings as well.

New chassis & engine

The Triton sits on a newly-developed ladder frame that has a 65% greater cross-sectional area than the previous model, achieving 60% better a torsional rigidity of. Fun fact: the new Triton's body is actually lighter than the last, thanks to the use of more 1,180 MPa high-tensile steel.

Powering the all-new Triton is the fresh 4N16 clean diesel engine that comes in three different outputs, depending on use:

• 204 PS, 470 Nm (high-output version)
• 184 PS, 430 Nm
• 150 PS, 330 Nm

The highest output engine is equipped with a new turbocharger and combustion system. Regardless, the engines are paired to either a six-speed automatic transmission (with Sport mode), or a six-speed manual gearbox.

Beyond the innards, the all-new Triton continues to use Mitsubishi's acclaimed Super Select 4WD-II and Easy Select systems, which are complemented by a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) that splits torque 40% to the front, and 60% to the back.

Models equipped with the Super Select 4WD-II system now have seven drive modes (including on-road modes), an increase over the four from the previous model. Variants with this system also have Active Yaw Control (AYC), derived from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Though the all-new Triton continues to use a double-wishbone structure for the front suspension, the mounting point for the upper arm has been moved upward to increase the stroke to 20 mm, a change that promises better handling and road comfort.

Round the back, it's got a lighter leaf spring system paired with thicker shock absorbers that Mitsubishi says still retains its strength despite providing greater comfort. Turning radius is now 6.2 metres; a whole metre more than the old model, but still not bad at all for a car of this size.

Full ADAS now for the Triton

Bringing the Triton straight to 2024 is the inclusion of the full suite of advanced driver aids (ADAS), encapsulating these features:

• Adaptive cruise control (ACC)
• Forward collision mitigation (FCM)
• Blind spot warning (BSW)
• Lane change assist (LCA)
• Rear cross traffic alert (RCTA)

Mitsubishi Connect telematics is also bundled in, allowing users to find the location of their truck, drive history, service due, and even remotely turn on air-conditioning all through their smartphone.
