Cried tears of gratitude driving home in one of my dream cars. A car that I’ve loved since I was a kid. The car that actually sparked my love for cars. My mom’s ex-husband had this exact car when I was growing up. 1990 Honda Prelude Si 4WS https://t.co/YdY0q1wQxo

This beauty here: Be still, my heart. Say hello to the 1985 Ford Tempo GL (the “GL” stood for “Good Lord”) This classic American Dream Car put out 86 HP, launching it from 0 to 60 in around 15 minutes, I mean seconds. Creature comforts included seats and windows. The ride was smoothish, as one could expect from a car designed around body roll. The handling was truly bovine. I had the pleasure of driving this sweet, sweet automotive marvel when I worked at a Honda dealership and got to drive 2 hours each way to do a vehicle transfer. The car I drove on the way to the destination was an ‘88 Honda Prelude Si 4WS. It was nice. It was really nice. When they handed me the keys to the Tempo, I tried my best to hide my disappointment and failed miserably. I was glad that I at least had a dealer plate so people who passed me on the road knew that this was, not my car. ,Really,.
The Honda Prelude had 4ws models but was only sold till 2001. That should be fairly cheap if you can find one.
I know that Honda Prelude BB1 and Nissan Skyline R33 in the early 1990’s both had four wheel (assisted) steering. In the Prelude it was quite a noticeable angle on the rear wheels if the car was stationary and the steering wheel was turned lock to lock. I am unsure if many cars have continued the design . Honda was a front wheel drive vehicle and they (Honda) believed the the 4ws with the Atessa drive system made it drive similar to a rear wheel drive feel. The R33 skyline however was already Rear wheel drive or four wheel drive. I doubt it made it drive like a front wheel drive vehicle. I guess it was as a means of improving the handling . I am yet to be convinced either way.
-Gordon Murray’s creation of McLaren F1 was heavily inspired by the Honda NSX. He was obsessed with the idea of saving as many weight as possible and the idea of a user friendly supercar. The NSX is the first car to use aluminium space frame, allowing the overall car to be lighter. Gordon took it as an inspiration for the McLaren F1’s carbon fibre monocoque chassis. He loves the NSX so much that he actually own(ed) 2 Honda NSX. Some quotes from Gordon Murray himself : "The moment I drove the 'little' NSX, all the benchmark cars–Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini–I had been using as references in the development of my car vanished from my mind," "Of course the car we would create, the McLaren F1, needed to be faster than the NSX, but the NSX's ride quality and handling would become our new design target." "[T]he NSX's very rigid chassis is excellent and would easily be capable of handling more power," - The Honda RA271 Formula One car is the first car to have flat-twelve engine. -The first car to have navigation system is the 1981 Honda Accord. -1988 Honda Prelude 4WS has the first four wheel steering system. It allows the rear wheels to rotate. -In 2013, Honda became the first Japanese automaker to be a net exporter to the United States, exporting 108,705 Honda and Acura models, while importing only 88,357
Passive rear wheel steering has been done since the ‘70’s. It uses variable compliance bushings to change the toe-in while braking or cornering. Active rear wheel steering has been done before in the 1990’s, most notably in my mind by Honda with the Prelude Si 4WS and Mitsubishi with various VR4 models, like the Galant and 3000GT. I think Mazda did a 626 for a few years with 4WS too. Modern cars with it, I’m not sure about that at all.
Quality of Design, Build and materials. They might not look the best sometimes but they dont let people down. A example of Design would be Honda’s VTEC or Hollow Cam technology. Both technologies working to help a car breath better, giving better mpg or performance. Or Hondas 4ws giving better stability and handling. A example of Build would be that the Japanese were the first with computer controlled robotic production lines and they were effective. Cars could now be built with laser precision. Nissan and Toyota being pioneers. My example of build would be to check out how well made they are check this video out. In armageddon a Hilux is what you need. Lastly work ethic is important and Japanese employees can be tremendously loyal and busy. Japanese car plants in the UK were busy but nothing on Japan. Employees often used to exercise on mass, before work. The company themselves often have company Mantra or Work Ethic. It's not often seen in western companies. The Toyota Way - Wikipedia One last thing is reliability is related to weight. The heaviest cars are often less reliable than the lightest. Citroen got onto this concept with the C4 Cactus, a very light car with low running costs. But it’s something the Japanese do naturally, they make slightly smaller cars but made of good quality, but often thinner gauge materials. The car can then have a smaller engine and will do better mileage or go quicker. It’s in the design, smaller is better theory. I hope I have not offended anyone. I absolutely love the Japanese and Americans. I just love Hondas although I once had a 1979 big block red corvette. Thirstier than a Alcoholic after some McDonalds Fries.
Japanese cars are well made and normally bring something special to the table. Honda for example has brought us Vtec, 4ws, Hollow cams and lightweight materials. Mazda bringing Rotary engines and the return of suicide doors.
Many car manufacturers have tried in vain to sell the public on 4WS (4 Wheel Steering). These include GM, Mazda, Honda, and Mitsubishi. The general public doesn’t see enough advantage in it to warrant the extra cost and complexity. I think some of the advertising has been bad, and also that many consumers have no real idea of what it can do for them. I once test drove a 4WS Honda Prelude. I knew what I was driving, and loved making the sharpest of low speed U-turns in that car. I ended up not buying the car, but enjoyed the experience.
There’s a reason that option wasn’t available for a long time. It added a massive amount of complexity for improvements in handling. Getting all the 4WS specific parts in good condition - the newest will be 24 years old - and having someone who actually knows what they’re doing install it will be a challenge of questionable value. But it’s been done.
The primary advantage with the 4WS is the ability to turn tighter at low speeds. As speed increases the electronic controller minimizes the amount of degree change such as a lane change at 60 MPH. In slippery weather there were some unusual reactions in the snow, such as an oscillation being confused on how much to turn and witch way, that was a sensor problem quickly fixed. For the most part the steering was benign and most drivers could not tell the 4WS from a normal steer. 4WS was first in service in 1987 on the Honda Prelude. I had a Mazda Franchise and our Mazda 626 arrived a few weeks after the Honda. The Mazda was more complicated and heavier than the Honda and though most people could not sense it the Mazda 4 wheels did steer in the same direction and I found the feeling of it disturbing. Mazda 323 All Wheel drive to MY RESCUE ! The 1988 Mazda 323 did everything right, This was a serious rally 4 wheel drive racer with a turbo. I could not leave it alone and made it mine. My drive from north Berkeley to Oakland added joy to my day. Cranking up the boost from the Turbo made it even faster. When it became time to sell it I hated letting it go.
