isuzu rodeo pickup Q&A Review

How many brand new vehicles have you purchased in your lifetime?

For me….9 so far 1988 Pontiac Trans Am, 2 door coupe red 5.0l 200 HP 5 speed 1992 Geo Storm GSi, 2 door coupe red 1.8l 140 HP 5 speed 1994 Isuzu Rodeo SUV, red 5 speed 1997 Pontiac Trans Am, 2 door coupe red 5.7l 300 HP 6 speed 2000 Isuzu Rodeo, SUV white 5 speed 2007 Chevy Avalanche, Pickup Truck white 2007 Chevy Aveo, 4 door sedan red 2012 Honda CBR 250R motorcycle 6 speed red, white and blue 2014 Chevy Spark, 5 door hatchback yellow, 5 speed Vehicles 6–9 are still in the family. I used to like fast cars, now I like cheap cars. I prefer to buy a brand new car as cheap as possible and drive it until the wheels fall off. And wherever possible I prefer to shift myself.

What is your opinion of Subaru, Suzuki, Isuzu and Mitsubishi vehicles?

Wow good question? One that I thought no one would ever ask. All of these have contenders for at least one of my top 20 favorite car/truck models. Mostly these manufacturers are above average. The Subaru wrx, Isuzu rodeo, Suzuki sidekick and samurai, and Mitsubishi Eclipse and pickups are cars that I would not hesitate to own. They aren’t as bulletproof as Honda and Toyota but they are up there. Mazda is another manufacturer I’d put up here too, and the Miata. Another topic that I could write too mainy pages on so I’ll stop right here.

Is the Honda Ridgeline actually a truck?

No. It is built on a car chassis. Honda has never made a real truck. The closest thing they offered was the original Passport, which was an Isuzu Rodeo. But even the new Passport is now just another car-based crossover.

When designing an automobile wheel, should you have an even or odd number of lug nuts?

I don’t think even or odd is a consideration, it’s about equally distributing the load across enough points to bear it. Most cars I have owned have 5 lug nuts. If you loose one, or twist the bolt into as I have done before, you can still drive on 4. Small imports and maybe some American subcompacts from the 70’s have 4 lugs, most cars have 5, 3/4 ton pickups might have 6 or 8. My wife drove an Isuzu Rodeo for several years that had 6 lug wheels. It’s not about odd or even but about the stress each lug bolt will endure. The weight of the vehicle is only one part of the equation. Acceleration, leaning into turns at speed, off road use, all of these things will apply torsion (rotating force) but also forces in other directions that attempt to tear the wheel from the vehicle.

What is considered the most reliable automotive engine of all time?

My opinion is there are 3 motors i would consider the most reliable and this is from the block to the components as well. Firstly my personal favourite is the K series petrol engine from Toyota. I have owned 4 vehicles with different types of K engines and not one major problem with them. The K series motors started in the first generation corollas and finished in the last generation Toyota Townace here in Australia. The K series motors have a few different sizes, (1) k at one litre 2k at 1.1 litre 3k at 1166cc 4k at 1.3lt 5k at 1.5lt And the biggest at 1.8lt the 7k The 3k had the most rounded reliability with simple points ignition and billy basic carburettor. My first Corolla had a 3k in it and never let me down. It had enough power in standard specs but i did the engine up for rallying with a basic cam upgrade and weber carburettors and exhaust done going from 56hp to 98hp. Plenty for what i was using it for and no dramas with the standard internals even at 8000rpm. I have seen some extreme 3k motors done up to 170hp and a rev limit of 10,000 rpm. These engines never easily wore out except for people not taking care of them. The KE30 series corollas were a great and reliable car mostly due to the combination of a good basic motor and a simple yet strong enough drive train. Second motor is the VW flat four from the early generations beetles. Same thing basic and easily repaired, i do not have much experience with VW engines but many who do sware by them and there are still un-rebuilt units still driving around. The last motor is the Isuzu 4j Diesel series motors. The 2.8lt 4JB1 is know as the million kilometre motor here in Australia. Fitter to the Isuzu Rodeo also badged as a Holden Rodeo here in Australia and chevy amigo/rodeo/pickup around the world. I have seen many still driving around Australia with some pretty high kilometres on them the highest being 750,000 km with only an injector and fuel pump rebuild after 500,000km. I currently own a 2002 Holden Rodeo with the first generation 4JH1 3.0lt and the only fault in this entire engine is the electronic controlled fuel pump which i had to replace the electronics in it at 250,000km. There is a conversion using the 4JB1 injection system to negate the issues with the electronics. Coupled with a truck drive train and strong body and chassis these rodeos are some of the most reliable utility vehicles around but most people do not like them for their lack of modifications available for extreme off-roading and simplistic interior but highly suitable for my needs and likes. I have driven mine all over this country through all types of weather conditions and terrains. I will keep this car for a long time. Whilst there are other good enginesout there from my experience and information these 3 motors are the most reliable. Second note these other motors are worth mentioning. Datsun L series and A series Honda civic 1st generation Nissan TD42 diesel Toyota 1H/2H diesel, 3b diesel, 1HZ diesel, Hilux Y series petrols, 4A series petrols, Mini’s early 4 cylinders in Coopers and Mokes Mitsubishi’s 4G series (most weren't taken care of seeing one had not had an oil change in over 75,000km and most not changed for up to 30,000km) some vehicles that had these motors were quite unpopular. Mitsubishi 4M40 diesel And Isuzu’s 4BD1 3.9lt diesel which in Australia was heavily used by the Australian Defence Force for many years in the highly modified Landrover Perentie 4x4 and 6x6 for its simplicity and reliability. Hope you have enjoyed this blog. All the best, Stefan, Australia.

Which cars have you driven up until now?

Wow, let’s see if I can still do this. 1972 Chevrolet C-10 pickup 1975 Ford Maverick 1984 Ford Tempo 1984 Mercury Topaz 1968 F-100 Ranger 1978 Chevrolet Nova 1993 Ford Tempo* The 68 Ranger, again 1989 Chevrolet Corsica* 80 something Ford Fairmont* 1975 Chevrolet Nova 1991 Isuzu Rodeo* 1985 Jeep Cherokee 1991 Mercury Sable* 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager* 1985 Ford Ranger 2002 Kia Sedona 2010 Chevy HHR 2010 Chevy HHR (wife totalled the first one) 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan *Indicates my wife’s cars. But I also drive them and do all the routine maintenance. The Sable started out hers but I drove it for another year after we got her something better. The Kia was mine, then hers, and my mother still drives it now.

Whatever happened to Isuzu?

Nothing. Isuzu Motors is still in business. If the question is “Why doesn’t Isuzu sell vehicles in the American market?” then the answer is that on January 31, 2009 Isuzu discontinued selling automobiles in North America due to nearly a decade of poor sales. At the end of their final sales year, the company sold a total 1,504 vehicles across the entire United States. To give an idea of how terrible that number is Ford sells 1.5x that F-150s pickup trucks on average per ,DAY. Frankly, Isuzu made several mistakes: The company entered into a relatively unequal partnership with GM, - WHile at first it appeared to be a wise move, as Isuzu sales slumped it became clear that GM was going to do little to help Isuzu. Isuzu spent desperately needed capital to buy itself out of its original partnership with GM, - Rather than investing funds in newer models, Isuzu bought back much of its stock from GM. Ultimately, this prove be a shortsighted move if the company planned on remaining in the US market. Isuzu never put the level of quality into its vehicles that other Japanese automakers did, - It’s top of the line SUV, The Trooper, was an underpowered and an underperforming disaster. Its Sprint was a small vehicle that wasn’t particularly fuel efficient and had a tendency to fall apart on the inside. Even its “best” model , the Rodeo SUV (also sold as the Honda Passport) began to grow stale at a time when other automakers were making huge strides in the SUV. For a few years after the company discontinued US auto sales, they made pickup trucks for GM. However a failure to successfully negotiate a new contract to do so in 2012 led to GM shutting down production of the two pickup models who parts were made by Isuzu. Currently Isuzu makes commercial trucks, diesel engines for GM trucks, and pickups for sale in Asia, Africa and South America. It no longer makes passenger cars. What will happen if I use motor oil in my transmission or vice versa?

In many transmissions, you can. In some, it is the recommended fluid. The Chevrolet LUV pickup, Honda Passport, Isuzu Rodeo and Trooper all recommended 15W-40 or 20W-50. As Jim said, Honda used 5W-30 or 10W-30 in their manual transmissions before coming up with the MTF. Classic Minis use motor oil in the transmissions, as the transmissions are in the oil pan, under the engine. Which means those Minis with Automatic transmissions use Motorcycle MA2 spec 10W-40 Many tractor trailers use SAE 50 motor oil or CAT TO-4 SAE 50, and prior to 1991, they only used SAE 50 motor oil. But: None of these should have modern SN oils, as the friction modifiers will make it difficult for the synchronizers to stop the cones…. Diesel formulations are ok. A good diesel formulation gives you at least 45 lb on the Timken test, which in general would pass the GL-4 gear category.

Do you always buy AWD to drive in the snow?

Honestly I have likely put in more miles with 2wd automobiles in the snow than I have with 4WD or AWD. Even when I had 4WD most of the time I had them in 2WD mode . The AWD has the advantage of not binding up on the asphalt. Certain brands have better handling in different conditions. The 1968 VW Beetle did great in the snow laughing at all the ditch divers while going along the main roads after a good snow. I did the same thing with a Ford Probe. Best hands down, so far as my testing, is Subaru even in 2WD mode. In 4WD mode, not even 3 bald tires gave me issues on ice and snow. The Isuzu Rodeo, even in 4X4 mode had issues, F250 4x4 did very well in the snow. The Mazda 929 RWD did surprisingly well on slick snow covered roads. Most of the time I prefer something with a bit of ground clearance, but that's because I hate shoveling snow and I found that a FULL sized pickup truck withh 4X4 will break through plough hills better than anything else I have driven.

What is the point of "badge engineering" in the automotive industry?

Because most of the time it works. It’s much cheaper to borrow a successful design than it is to create your own design, and given the huge excess capacity in vehicle production, it is much cheaper to have one proven factory build two brand variants than to create a duplicate production line for the second brand. Badge engineering has a long history: ,List of badge-engineered vehicles - Wikipedia,. Badge engineering means that one vehicle platform is used for multiple brands, and therefore sold in different dealerships. Often, a major carmaker maintains different brands to appeal to different segments of a market: GMC carries a different appeal than Chevy, so they build both a Chevy Tahoe and a GMC Yukon. There are a number of trim differences, so the starting price for the GMC is $1500 higher than the Chevy, and the top-of-the-line Denali 4WD is about $7000 above the Chevy Premier 4WD version. ,2018 Chevrolet Tahoe vs 2018 GMC Yukon, . Even though most GMC dealers also carry Chevrolet products, GM is better off with two versions of the vehicle to appeal to a broader spectrum of buyers by playing up different attributes for the different audiences. This can get rather extreme: From 1982–8, GM positioned a “luxury” version of the J-car Cavalier (base price for the 1982 4-door sedan, $7,137) as the “Cimmaron by Cadillac,” with a price tag starting at $12,131. Needless to say, the Caddy version sold quite poorly, and today, the Chevy actually carries a slightly higher retail value. The J car design served many brands: the Pontiac J2000/ Sunbird, Buick Skyhawk, Oldsmobile Firenza, Holden Camira, Isuzu Asia, and Opel Ascona. ,GM J platform - Wikipedia 1982 Chevrolet Cavalier 4 Door Sedan Prices, Values & Cavalier 4 Door Sedan Price Specs,. 1982 Cadillac Cimarron 4 Door Sedan Prices, Values & Cimarron 4 Door Sedan Price Specs There are two other cases where badge engineering makes business sense: An international car company has a strong presence in one market with Brand A and a strong presence in a second market with brand B. So they sell the same platform in the two countries under different names: Opel in Germany, Vauxhall in UK, and Chevrolet in the Americas; Renault in France and Nissan in Japan. Honda supports the Acura brand in the US and Japan, but uses just the Honda brand to sell the same vehicles in Europe. It is far cheaper to reuse a design under different co-owned brands than to support multiple design projects for the different vehicle markets you might compete in. A vehicle from a partner (which might involve partial ownership or just a long or short-term collaboration contract) fits a gap in your portfolio. Often, the badge-engineered vehicle is meant to be a short-term filler until you get your own design out into the market, but sometimes that short term can stretch on for years. Some notable examples include the first generation Honda Passport/Acura SLX, which was a badge-engineered Isuzu Rodeo (1993–2002), eventually replaced by the Honda-engineered Pilot/MDX; Ford Probe, a US-built version of the Mazda MX-6 coupe (1988–1997), and the VW Routan, a version of Chrysler’s Town and Country / Grand Caravan minivan (2009–13), part of an ill-fated attempt by VW to grow its US footprint with new categories. Mercedes is partnering with Nissan for its X-Class pickup truck, based on the Nissan Navara / Frontier, recently introduced in Germany as a 2018 model. As the auto industry continues to consolidate to deal with its excess capacity problems, I expect we will see badge engineering carry well into the future. It’s hard for a company to shutter an extensive dealer network, while it’s much easier to share or license designs and production capacity to round out your product portfolio for all the markets where you compete.
