UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has launched the racy-looking 2020 Toyota Vios GR Sport (GR-S) alongside the mad GR Yaris in an online event with prices starting from RM 95,284.

Here's how the prices (excluding SST, valid until 31-December 2020) compare with the rest of the Vios line-up:

• 1.5 J - RM 74,623
• 1.5 E - RM 82,593
• 1.5 G - RM 87,584
• 1.5 GR-S - RM 95,284

Based on the Toyota Vios facelift, the Vios GR-S is a sort of sporty version of the humble Vios. The Malaysian debut is also the regional debut for the hot-version of the Vios.

That being said, it is RM 7,700 dearer than the top-of-the-line Vios 1.5 G. So, what do you get for 7 grand more?

2020 Toyota Vios GR Sport features

On the exterior, the Vios GR-S features a very aggressive bumper design that looks similar to the bonkers GR Yaris. This does bode well to give the enhanced Vios a very sporty vibe.

Elsewhere, the Vios GR-S gains the following visual enhancements:

• Black 17-inch alloy wheels on 205/45R17 low profile tyres
• Blacked-out boot spoiler, door handles, and side mirrors
• Side skirts
• Rear bumper with diffuser
• GR Sport emblem

Inside, the Vios GR-S gets a very sporty-looking interior including:

• Leather-suede combination seats 
• Embossed GR logos on the front headrests and floor carpets
• Red stitching on the gear knob, steering wheel, and door armrests
• GR push start button
• Red Optitron meters
• GR animation in digital display

2020 Toyota Vios GR Sport performance

Under the hood, the Vios GR-S uses the same 2NR-FE 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine (107 PS/140 Nm) but instead of the usual CVT with 7 virtual ratios, this has been upgraded to one featuring 10 virtual ratios.

This “10-speed” CVT is activated via the car’s Sport mode which results in a more responsive throttle and a higher rpm range.

Besides the higher gear ratio count, the Vios GR-S also receives a sport suspension set-up which Toyota claims to give a balance between comfort and sporty. The sports suspension also promises better handling around high-speed corners.

Just like the Vios 1.5 G, the Vios GR-S comes equipped with the following safety features:

• Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) ADAS suite which includes:
  • Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
  • Lane Departure Alert (LDA)
• 7 airbags
• Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA)
• 3D 360-degree camera

2020 Toyota Vios GR Sport colours

When it comes to the selection of hues, there are two colours exclusive to the Vios GR-S which are Red Mica Metallic and Platinum White Pearl.

However, the GR body kit and sports suspension are available as a separate purchase only for the Vios 1.5 G variant for RM 7,700.

The Vios GR-S is only available at selected Toyota dealers. 17 are located in the Central region, 3 in the Eastern region, 13 in the Southern region, and 10 located in the Northern Region. You can check the locations at this link.
