Rumour: Next-gen Perodua Myvi and updated Toyota Vios could receive 110 PS turbo 1.0L engine 01

The naturally aspirated NR-VE engines have been a staple on the Perodua Myvi and Toyota Vios for years. The 1.3-litre 1NR-VE and 1.5-litre 2NR-VE are robust powerplants but despite their bulletproof reliability, they are due to be replaced especially in the new DNGA era.

The Daihatsu New Generation Architecture platform is used on the all-new AC100 Toyota Vios and will underpin the next-generation Perodua Myvi. Though the fourth-generation Vios is powered by the venerable 2NR-VE, it may receive a more powerful turbocharged unit for its next update.

As reported by Automachi which cited information from Japanese media, the NR-VE powerplants may be compatible with cars utilising the DNGA platform but Toyota and its partner Daihatsu are developing a new range of engines to keep its future line-up more competitive.

The solution is through a new generation of turbocharged 1.0-litre direct-injected engines that produce a maximum output of 110 PS/200 Nm. It’s a bump over the NA 1.5-litre 2NR-VE’s figures which makes 106 PS/138 Nm in the Vios.

Ativa's turbo 1KR-VET unit

The new turbo unit’s expected figures are even higher than the Ativa’s 1.0-litre turbo powerplant which produces 98 PS/140 Nm. The engine used in the entry-level SUV also does not come with direct injection.

Automachi’s rumours are based on a report by Best Car Web which reported that the next-generation Toyota Passo is being developed. The Passo has been discontinued since September 2023 but it likely will not stay dead for long.

According to the Japanese automotive publication, the fourth-gen Passo could be introduced around the third quarter (Q3) of 2024. The turbocharged powerplant could be used on the next-gen Passo/Boon along with the Roomy/Thor with the latter being the more successful model in Japan.

There is still no timeline for the updated Vios as the AC100 was introduced in 2022 but if based on previous generations, we could see a major facelift in 2025-26. Meanwhile, the next-gen Myvi is rumoured also to be more closely related to the next-gen ASEAN/development market Toyota Yaris.
