So, it seems that the Toyota Passoās chapter isnāt completely over if this Japanese scoop is to be believed. While it is curtains for the third-generation Passo, its twin, the Daihatsu Boon is still being offered and Daihatsu has not yet announced an end to its production.
While the first two generations of the Passo/Boon share similarities with the respective generations of the Perodua Myvi, the third-gen Malaysian supercar is dissociated from the outgoing generation. Also, the third-gen Passo is simply a rebadge of the Boon, unlike its predecessors which were jointly developed between Toyota and Daihatsu.
Hence, Japanese media have been speculating a fourth generation of the Boon is in development which could also see it being rebadged as the Passo. According to Best Car Web, the next-gen Boon/Passo could be sitting on the DNGA platform in line with the rest of the Daihatsu model line-up.
Currently, both the Boon and the Thor are the only Daihatsu models not underpinned by the DNGA platform. The Thorās Toyota twin, the Roomy is one of Japanās best-selling cars and its current platform is shared with the Boon.
Therefore, the next-gen Roomy/Thor could be in development alongside the next-gen Passo/Boon. Aside from a more modern platform, Best Car Web also reported that the former Myvi donorās next generation could be equipped with a turbocharged 1.0-litre 3-pot engine that makes 110 PS/196 Nm.
The Japanese automotive site also reported that it will be a new engine as the power figures are a significant bump from the 98 PS/140 Nm 1KR-VET engine used on the Daihatsu Rocky/Toyota Raize/Perodua Ativa.
While the outgoing Passo/Boon was designed primarily for female buyers, its successor is reportedly targeted more towards male buyers. Hence, the huge power boost and Best Car Webās rendering seemed more sporty than cute. The X4 variant which was last seen in the first generation Boon is also expected to be revived in the all-new generation.
Best Car Web expects the all-new Passo/Boon to make its debut around the third quarter (Q3) of 2024. Still, the Myviās relationship with its Japanese donors is getting further apart as the successor is rumoured to be more closely related to the next-gen ASEAN/development market Toyota Yaris.
